Are You Qualified to Live With a Rabbit?

Before going on a search for a rabbit, test yourself to see if you have the necessary qualifications to be a good rabbit companion. The questions are tough, but the rewards of sharing your life with a house rabbit are great. Ask yourself

Do you have a sense of humor?

Rabbits can be mischievous little critters! A good sense of humor will help you weather any mischief your furry mischief maker creates.

Are you willing to learn rabbit-speak?

Can you take time to watch and listen? Rabbits have a lots to say, and they do it all with body talk. It takes a little practice to understand the meanings behind their behavior.

Are you willing to do a little more house cleaning?

Shedding, hay, and rabbit droppings mean more sweeping and vacuuming. But don't worry -- your little lagomorph will help!

Are you willing to make some compromises in your interior decorating?

Rabbits need to be protected from dangerous electrical and phone cords; furniture may need to be moved to keep them out of reach. Furniture may also need to be moved so that rabbits cannot hide from you or make them impossible to catch.

Are you willing to follow safety rules?

Keep electric and phone cords away from bunny. Keep unsafe objects such as poisonous plants and small toys out of bunny's reach.

Are you willing to supervise children's activities with the rabbit?

Children should not be encouraged to pick up rabbits -- rabbits can bite and scratch when spooked, and need proper support of their back and legs. Children's hands are too small to hold any rabbit.

Are you (the adult) willing to accept responsibility for the care of the rabbit?

Sharing your life with any companion animal is a big responsibility. Rabbits can live for many years (average lifespan of properly cared for house rabbits is 10 - 12 years) and are totally dependent on you for their care (daily and medical) the entire time.

Will you take bunny with you if you have to move?

You are considering adding a new member to your family. If you need to relocate, all family members should be considered when planning the move and new accommodations.

If you answered Yes to these questions, you should make a wonderful bunny companion. When you find your new friend, you are sure to have many happy years together.
