Six weeks # 2 Six weeks # 4
This six weeks we are studying American History from Reconstruction through the end of the 19th century. We will be learning about the Transcontinental Railroad, The Homestead Act, the different settlers who came to the Great Plains (and the hardships they faced), and the conflicts between the army, the new settlers, and the Indians who lived on the plains. We will also learn about cattle drives in the old west.
Six weeks # 3
We begin the third six weeks with a unit called Immigration and Industry. In this unit we will be looking at how immigration affected the United States in the 19th century, how America expanded its role as a world leader, and how the assembly line changed life in America.

In addition to the Immigration and Industry unit, we will be working on our
social studies projects for the Whitfield County Social Studies Fair. These projects will include a lengthy report with a bibliography and a tri-board. The projects will be explained in greater detail with materials coming home at the end of November. Students will be given time to work on the projects in their social studies and language arts classes, but they will also be expected to work on their projects at home. The projects will count for grades in both social studies and language arts for the third six weeks. The projects will be due the week of December 17th.

Also during the third six weeks, Mr. O'Connor's class will have
Junior Achievement. The five-session class (December 3, 4, 5, 10, and 11) teaches kids about economics and business principles and is part of our standards in social studies.
