Math Study Guide - Multiplying and Dividing Decimals

Multiplying a whole number times a decimal number:
1-multiply the way you would normally multiply with whole numbers
2-put a decimal on the right side of your answer
3-count how many digits were on the right side of the decimal in both numbers of the problem
4-move the decimal in your answer that same number of spaces to the left

Estimating products (answers to multiplication problems):
1-round all whole numbers to place value position (unless the directions tell you what to round to)
2-round all decimals to the nearest tenth (unless the directions tell you what to round to)
3-multiply the rounded numbers the same way you multiply any decimal problem

Multiplying a decimal by another decimal:
1-multiply the way you would normally multiply with whole numbers
2-put a decimal on the right side of your answer
3-count how many digits were on the right side of the decimal in both numbers of the problem
4-move the decimal in your answer that same number of spaces to the left

Estimating quotients (answers to division problems):
1-move the decimal in the divisor (the number outside the house) to the right side of the number
2-move the decimal in the dividend the same number of spaces to the right...fill in any blanks with zeros
3-round the dividend and the divisor the same way you rounded with whole number division (choice of: rounding or compatible numbers) If you decide to round...round all whole numbers to place value position (unless the directions tell you what to round to), round all decimals to the nearest tenth (unless the directions tell you what to round to), and round mixed decimals to the nearest tetn OR the nearest whole number.
4-divide normally (make sure to line up the decimal point in the quotient with the decimal point in the dividend)

Multiplying decimals by powers of ten:
1-the little number above and to the right of a number is called an exponent
2-the exponent tells how many times that you multiply by that number for example: 10 with a little 4  means 10 x 10 x 10 x 10 or 10 multiplied four times NOT 10 times 4, 8 with a little 3 means 8 x 8 x8 or 8 multiplied 3 times NOT 8 times 3
3-when multiplying decimals by 10 with an exponent you don't actually have to do any multiplying...all you have to do is move the decimal to the right. The exponent tells you how far to move the decimal.

Dividing decimals by powers of ten:
1-when dividing decimals by 10 with an exponent you don't actually have to do any dividing...all you have to do is move the decimal to the left. The exponent tells you how far to move the decimal.

Dividing a decimal by a whole number:
1-bring the decimal directly up to the quotient from the divisor
2-divide like you would normally do with whole numbers a. divide b. multiply c. subtract d. bring down e. repeat  Repeating decimals: 1-a fraction is just another way to write a division problem
2- the numerator (the top of the fraction) is the dividend and the denominator (bottom) is the divisor
3-to change the fraction into a decimal you need to divide like normal...if you have a remainder just add a decimal point and a zero...keep adding zeros until you either get rid of the remainder or you decide that there is a repeating pattern in your answer
4- an answer with a repeating pattern is called a repeating decimal
5-to show that the number repeats...put a solid line above the numbers that repeat

Dividing a decimal by another decimal:
1-move the decimal in the divisor (the number outside the house) to the right side of the number
2-move the decimal in the dividend the same number of spaces to the right
3-bring the decimal directly up to the quotient 4-divide like you would normally divide any decimal or whole number problem
