Unknown NH Band Member
CDV of New Hampshire Civil War Bandsman with Bass Drum. An unidentified infantry musician with NHV brass insignia and illegible single digit number on forage cap. He holds a drum beater posed next to a massive bass drum exhibiting well-used heads. The bass drum was not normally allocated to field music but rather the combined regimental or brigade band. At the start of the war many regiments fielded full bands numbering between 15 and 50 pieces but these were abolished by Act of Congress in July 1862 and the enrolled musicians declared supernumerary and discharged. Afterwards, some brigade bands managed to survive largely at the discretion of music-loving commanding officers.
