Mason, Granville P. 1st LT Co A 7th NH Vols

Granville P. Mason was employed in cotton manufacturing and helped recruit men for the Seventh Regiment in 1861. He was mustered in as first lieutenant for Company A, the first of his rank. On November 1, 1862, he was promoted to be Captain of Company B. While the regiment was in St. Augustine, Florida, Mason was on patrol with three men and encountered a squad of Dickinson's men. Seeing an officer, the rebels supposed that a company was near and retreated. The captain and his men got safely back to Federal lines. Later, a deserter informed Union officials that the rebels had a total of seventeen men on patrol that day and never assumed the Federal front numbered four men. Mason was ill during the Folly Island siege, but was with the regiment for the remainder of the siege of Morris Island and Fort Sumter. He led his company in the battle of Olustee, Florida. Mason then worked as a recruiter in New Hampshire and upon returning to the regiment in Virginia, his health finally broke down. He mustered out of service due to illness in October 1864.
