That the run was made alongside the ‘Heart Cardiac Re-hab Centre’ gave pause for thought, and I have to say that our delectable collection of ladies on display certainly made my heart race.  Of course it was the Valentine’s Day Run, and most chose to run with something red on their person, with Anorak, the chief hare, adding a bit of spice with pink flour on the trail.

A good turnout was supplemented by virgins Andy and Pip, and from the Surrey Hash, Doggie Style. We started in the direction of the railway line with the first check going to our GM JGG, as we made our way toward Chawton via the underpass.  We FRBs were in for a shock though, and an extended skip along the high street brought us to the feared bar and a back-check.  Old Thumper took advantage leaving other FRBs to play ‘Russian roulette’ with the A31 traffic, and took us towards the Butts in Alton.  I then dragged us across the green before finding a check and then we zigzagged behind some houses before I lost the plot.  Not to be out-done, our ladies continued their good start and Ladyshave found the check as we made our way uphill.  Cloggs then joined in, and we entered the Meadows and our first regroup with the pack well spread out.

Velcro(m) then turned up wearing Petal’s blue woolley hat, encouraging Old Thumper to comment ‘which old gran had he got that from’.  Unperturbed we checked out, and my local knowledge paid off when I called On to take us across a road and up across a farmers field with good views of Alton behind.  I then built up a big lead as I took us back into the suburbs and then after finding more checks, took us into Ackanders Wood.  My progress slowed after a few more checks, until I stumbled toward the only likely exit point from the woods to find a check .  Descending down a pathway brought me to the sports field and a ‘Rolo On Inn’ and the finish.  Feeling a bit cheated, I returned back up to the woods and after meeting other FRBs WHO HAD GONE THE RIGHT WAY! ,escorted  my beloved Petal to the finish just behind Bidet who claimed to have been first back on the legitimate trail.
