NEW YORK — Christmas in July, or the north face government sales even August? Maybe not a bad idea this year.
Retailers are already talking about price increases of up to 15 percent this year on holiday goods, from staples like tree ornaments and toys to luxury gifts like European handbags and clothing. The main cause? It's the same old chestnut: soaring energy prices.
While most consumers are just starting to think about back-to-school shopping, retailers are already preparing for the critical best sunscreens for face holiday season. Consumers have been seeing prices creep up for many products, but now escalating cost pressures — which are also being fueled by the weaker dresser lincoln facedollar and higher labor costs in China — are forcing merchants from low-price warehouse clubs to upscale clothiers to passmary pierce s faceon more of the burden in the months ahead. That could mean a serious hit for the economy, since consumer spending accounts for two-thirds of all economic activity and the holiday period accounts for a huge chunk of merchants' sales and profits. "Truthfully, I probably won't purchase items that go up that much — especially something like Christmas decorations," said Marilyn Reese of Cincinnati. Carl Steidtmann, chief economist at Deloitte Research, says that price inflation will kitchen face lift be yet "another factor that undermines consumer purchasing power and will hurt spending even more." "This will be a very difficult holiday season," he said. The price increases come as stores also have to be pushing even deeper discounts this holiday season to attract customers. Gambling is seen as almost as much of a threat to the Beijing Olympics as drugs and demonstrations by an International Olympic Committee deeply concerned that betting gangs, so active in this part of the world, may try to manipulate certain results in the Games, as they have in sports such as cricket, football and tennis. The likelihood is that the Brits can win most of their medals by simply not getting off their backsides – on bikes, in boats and on horseback. Even the British Government are gambling that a golden windfall in Beijing will divert concerns about just how much it will eventually cost to put on even half as good a show four years hence, with China having already spent more than double London's £9.3bn stem cells face budget on theirs without even a raised eyebrow. Not that the Chinese aren't gambling too. Currently their biggest gamble is whetherthe cloying pollution which threatens to relabel knit hat with face protection these the Smog Games can be lifted to let everyone breathe easily. "When we get to Beijing we'll be fired up and ready to go," says boxing hope Frankie Gavin, one of the weight-watchers whose eyes have been more on the salad bowl than dim sum. When they arrive in Beijing they will encounter three separate rings of security surrounding Olympic City. Those of us covering the Games know the Chinese authorities will be watching every move we make and reading every word we write. Photographers snapping any unauthorised demos and journalists attempting to tap into banned websites will risk being arrested for an offence described as "disturbing social order", the penalty for which is a year in a labour camp for "re-education" without even a court hearing. Human rights? Even many IOC members privately admit they have gambled and lost on that issue. The Games slogan is One World, One Dream, but come 25 August the probability is that China will still be living in a world of its own and will have achieved its dream of winning more medals than any other nation. You don't need to be pulling a slot machine here to appreciate that Beijing 2008 is the biggest gamble sport will face. These Games will be the most expansive, expensive, extravagant and surely the most politically vexed of the 11 that I have attended. They will also be successful. Just don't bet on them being fun.
