You might look at the world map and say, "Wow, this place is big. Where should I go first?" Well, here I have provided a handy dandy travel guide of sorts. This page is broken down into sections, with a brief description of each, and a listing of the points of interest in each area.
And here's a quick way to get around the world: place your cursor over the map icon in the upper-right corner of the screen. A map will drop down, covered with little dots. It looks a little something like this:

map

The white dots are players; you are the large white one in the center. (In case anyone is wondering, I'm standing just south of the Champion's Guild.) The yellow dots are monsters and characters in the game. The blue dots are objects that can't be picked up - posts, doors, trees, etc - while the red dots are items. Just click on the map where you want to go, and the character will choose the shortest route to get there.

Where to go, where to go? What are all those places on the map? Where's the forge and the smithy? Just click on a place name below to see a brief decription, as well as what can be found there.
The places page is divided into four parts: Misthalin (the eastern kingdom), Asgarnia (the middle kingdom), the island of Karamja far to the south, the the Wilderness to the north, and Crandor Isle, home of the Dragon. And The Kandarin

Here's a list of maps we've got:
Karamja Isle
Crandor Isle
Members Dungeon(labeled)
Isle of Entrana
Ice Dungeon

We also have mining maps, located on the smithing/mining page.
Thanks a million to R2keen2 for the Wilderness maps, and a million to Chornaey for the labeled members dungeon map!!

Misthalin

Al Kharid

Located in the SE portion of the world map, Al Kharid is technically a kingdom of its own, complete with camels, cacti, and scorpions. Since there is only the one town and the Chasm Mine, I've lumped it in with Misthalin. It also boasts several unique shops: the Scimitar Shop, the Kebab Shop, and the Skirt Shop. One of the two forges is located here, as well as a small general store, a silk trader, and a tanner. You can only buy silk here, and the general store in Al Kharid will not buy it, but you can sell it Varrock for a tidy profit - a good way to make money, if you don't mind going back and forth. Al Kharid is also the jumping-off spot for a quest; talk to the Chancellor in the Palace.

Barbarian Village

This small town can be found at the far west part of the map, due west of Varrock along the road. There is not much here in the way of amenities - just a large mead hall where beer and cooked meat can be had for free and a fight is always going on. The barbarians wandering about here are tough, especially their leader, Gunthor the Bold, but they will not attack unless provoked. The village also has a small mine where tin and coal, can be mined, a helmet shop, and a small kiln with two pottery wheels.

Champions' Guild

This small building SW of Varrock is reserved for the elite players, those who have gained the maximum amount of quest points through the completion of quests, which comprises only a couple hundred of the several thousand who play. The Guildhall has a small shop upstairs, where you can buy black metal helmets, black metal legs, and blue capes, which can't be found anywhere else. It also has a small pen to one side with chickens, for those who want a snack, and a range in back to cook your meat. There is also an emergency escape ladder, located on the second floor. It drops you outside the building, on the south side (which is where I'm standing in the picture above).

Cook's Guild

Located just north of Juliet's farm, this three-story building is the home for the finest chefs in Runescape (level 32 cooking and up, plus you need a Chef's Hat). The top floor has a pot for flour, a jug for water, and grapes for wine, as well as a hopper to put grin into. The second floor has the millstone, apples, pie dishes, and two ranges to cook bread and pies. The bottom floor is where you get the flour to make dough and a sink for water.

Draynor Manor

This spooky house is the home of Count Draynor the vampire (who is the subject of a quest). The place also houses other powerful creatures, including a skeleton in a closet (I don't think Andrew realized the pun when he made that one), a witch, and a few ghosts. The mad scientist on the top floor is also the subject of another quest - you have to help him find the missing pieces to his machine.

Edgeville

Edgeville is the former Ghost Town. With the appearance of the Wilderness, the Ghost Town became refurbished and resettled. Now there are a bank and general store here. The only thing notable about this place is the dungeon, which is recommended for powerful players only. There is a mine in the dungeon, in which you can find mithril and adamantium ores, as well as gold, coal, and tin/copper, and it also has a back door (that small hut), so you can go down and fight giants or go mining without running the gauntlet every time.

Lumbridge Castle

This is where you start the game, and where you end up every time you die. Second to Varrock, this is perhaps the busiest place in the game. Right outside the front gate of the castle is a guide who can give many helpful tips to beginning players. Nearby is the general store and the second forge. If you talk to a certain someone inside the castle, you can find a quest, and if you go to the church, you will find another quest. An axe shop is located in the building just south of the castle. Also, newbies wil be glad to note that the castle is a "no-kill zone" - that is, no player can attack another inside the castle and in a small area around the castle.

Draynor Village

This small village just south of Draynor Manor bears the name of the evil Count. Morgan is about the only person here, and he is the one to talk to about the vampire quest. Other personalities who have recently moved here include Ned the Sailor and Aggie the Witch. Highwaymen often accost travellers to the north of town, while darkwizards can be found to the south. Also to the southeast is a large jail.

Stone Circle

As you follow the road north from Lumbridge to Varrock, you'll pass a large circle of stones to the east. This is the Stone Circle. It was built many years ago by a coven of evil wizards who used it to summon the demon Delrith into this plane. A mighty hero wiedling the sword Silverlight defeated the demon and sent it back to its own plane, but now evil wizards are again trying to bring Delrith forth. One of the quests involves finding Silverlight and sending Delrith back to his home plane. Two kinds of darkwizards, bearded and clean-shaven, also frequent the area; the bearded ones are far more powerful, but give more treasure when killed. Both kinds are very agressive and will attack anyone who comes near them, so newbies, beware!

Varrock

Varrock is the largest city in Runescape right now. Located due north of Lumbridge Castle, Varrock boasts a variety of things to do and see: a sword shop, a staff shop, a general store, a rune shop, two smithies, an armorer, a bow shop, a tavern, an apothecary, a church, a bank, a dungeon, and two thieves' guilds. Right beside the Rune Shop is a smith who can change male armor to female and vice versa. There are places for you to practice your combat and archery skills, but the archery range is not functional (and likely will never be); the player houses in the eastern part of the city likewise are not open yet.
Varrock is the home of not one, but three separate quests, which can be discovered by talking to various people in the city. The manhole just east of the palace leads down into the city sewers, wherein rats, skeletons, ghosts, and other foul things lurk in the darkness. Many a brave adventurer has gone below and returned with riches, and many more haven't returned at all.

Wizards' Tower

Wizards' Tower is located on a small island at the far SE portion of the map. This places figures strongly in two different quests. Many wizards can be found here, and the doughty adventurer can kill them for their blue robes and hats, which improve magical mastery.

Asgarnia

Asgarnia is located due west of the Barbarian Village, for those of you who don't know - it's that huge kingdom beyond the fence.

Black Knights Castle

Located atop Ice Mountain, this large castle is home to the Black Knights (not the clan, the monster). The castle is the subject of a quest - you can get in, but not through the front doors. Black knights and guards abound here.

Chaos Temple

The home of the evil Monks of Zamorak, this tower sits at the far northwestern corner of Asgarnia. The monks are nasty little buggers who curse you (see their entry in the Bestiary), so the only real reason I can see for going there is the wine that spawns on a table in the tower.

Dwarf Mine

Located inside Ice Mountain, this huge mine can be accessed by a ladder in a hut near the top. You can mine tin, copper, clay, coal, iron, gold, mithril, and adamantium ores there. There are mine carts here for ore, and lots of dwarves to kill, a general store, and an ore shop with copper, tin, and iron ores, and bronze, iron and gold bars.

Falador

This large city is located due west of the Barbarian Village. It has three new shops not found in Misthalin: a shield shop, a chain mail shop, and a gem shop, as well as a general store, a bank, a forge, and player-owned houses. The White Knights Castle is located in the southern part of the town on its own island, and the Knights and guards keep the peace here.

Goblin Village

Like the name suggests, this is a squalid little village of goblins, located on the west side of Snow Mountain. Plenty of rats and goblins of both varieties to kill, as well as a quest.

Ice Giants' Dungeon

This small dungeon is located at the far southern end of Asgarnia. It is the only place in Runescape where you can find the fabled blurite ore, and where you can find ice giants. To get to the ore, you have to run a gauntlet of muggers, pirates, hobgoblins, ice warriors, and ice giants, so be prepared.

Ice Mountain

The fabled Ice Mountain is located at the far north end of Asgarnia, due west of Ghost Town. There are several points of interest on the mountain, including the Dwarf Mines, the Monastery, and the Black Knights Castle.

Monastery of the Healing Hand

No, it's not really called that, but I thought it was catchy and appropriate - so sue me. The monastery is located on the eastern slopes of Ice Mountain and is populated by (you guessed it) monks. These monks are special - they can heal a some hits (8) by laying on hands. There is a large cabbage patch out back and sheep that can be shorn for wool, and a new special area for the most devout (31 prayer) where you can get monk's robes that prolong prayer duration, as well as get your Holy Stars blessed by Brother Jered, or pray at the altar there for extra prayer points.

Port Sarim

Port Sarim is the dock area located at the far southern end of the border between Asgarnia and Misthalin. The local tavern, the Rusty Anchor, sells ale by the pint (-2 attack, +1 hits), and the local Magic Emporium sells runes of all types, hats, and eye of newt. There's also a Food Shop here, with flour, bananas, redberries, rawmeat, cheese, chocolate, and a slot for bread - they don't carry it normally, but you can sell it there. There's a jewelry shop, where you can buy and sell rings, necklaces, and amulets, A Fishing Shop for all your fishing needs, and last but not least is the Axe Shop, where you can buy the highly sought Adamantium Battle Axe. Here also you can buy passage on a ship to the island of Karamja for just 30 gold. Looking for buried treasure? Talk to Redbeard Pete; he might be able to help you.

Rimmington

This small village is located in the wilderness of Asgarnia, in the southeastern corner of the land. There is not much there to recommend it to the average traveler, except for the practicing witch, Hetty. If you want to become one with your dark side (i.e., improve your magic), she's the person to talk to. There is also a small mine northeast of town where you can find copper, tin, clay, and iron ores, and a crafting shop that buys and sells chisels and molds for necklaces, rings, and amulets.

White Knights Castle

This large castle in the southern part of Falador is the site of not one, but two quests: the Knight's Sword Quest, and the Black Knight's Fortress Quest. Obviously, you can find White Knights here.

Karamja

Map

Since Karamja is just a small island, there is no list of points of interest here. Ships set sail from Port Sarim, and the trip costs 30 gold. The island itself has a banana plantation, a liquor store (yes, that's right folks, there's no minimum drinking age in Runescape!), and a new dungeon in a volcano, where you can find Lesser Demons, Skeletons, and Deadly Red Spiders. Scorpions and imps abound on the island, but there isn't much else there. Didn't bring enough money for the return trip? No problem - just talk to Luthas, the owner of the banana plantation near the dock. He'll put you to work crating up bananas for shipment to Port Sarim, and pay you 30 gold when you're done.

The Wilderness

The Wilderness is located at the far northern edge of the map. You can't miss it - once you get near it, you'll receive a warning. The entire Wilderness is a PK zone. This means that ALL players are PK. It is also divided into zones - the number at the bottom right is the zone number; this number is the PVP (player vs player) range. So for example, if Joe123, level 23 player, were in Level 5 Wilderness, he could attack and be attacked by anyone from level 18-level 28. The wilderness extends clear to level 48, and holds a number of points of interest, like a couple graveyards, a lava maze, and three mines.
Rather than list the points of interest as such, I have decided to list them by zone. Once I have a clearer picture of the Wilderness, I might divide them into points of interest. Thanks to Shadow Jack and The Kommando for risking life and limb to get me information

Level 4

Due north of the Chaos Temple is a darkwizard stomping ground. About a dozen darkwizards of both types appear here.

Level 6

A small mine with two coal rocks and an iron rock, guarded by Level 24 Skeletons.

Level 8

The Skeleton Mine is located here, due north of the Ice Mountain. For more information, click here.

Level 11

There is a temple of Zamorak here, surrounded on three sides by a lava moat. Strangely, there are no monks of Zamorak here, just an altar where you can recharge prayer points.

Level 13

Aggressive bears guard several bronze arrow spawn points here, just north of the Skeleton Mine.

Level 16

There are two small graveyards here, guarded by Level 24 Zombies and Zombies with axes.

Levels 17-18

The lava river runs through these zones; a lone bridge north of the Jolly Boar Inn here is guarded by a Giant. Nearby, there is a ruined building inhabited by Ghosts.

Level 20

Due north of the Chaos Temple is a small ruined village. There are four gold spawn points just south of the village, a cake tin spawn, and a net and fishing bait spawn in the houses. In another of the houses, behind a web, is an anvil guarded by two Level 31 Spiders.

Level 23

Somewhere near the middle of the wilderness is a small area where crossbow bolts spawn in 2's, guarded by Level 26 Bears.

Level 24

Mind runes spawn here, in a small boneyard area guarded by scimitar skels, on the east coast of the Wilderness.

Level 26

Here, north of the Jolly Boar Inn, is the place where you can find Big Bones, which give 4x the prayer points of normal bones. Skeletons with Scimitars spawn here also.

Level 28

There is a small ridge here, dead center of the Wilderness, overlooking a Chaos Dwarf stomping ground.

Level 29

The Hobgoblin Mine can be found here. For more information, click here.

Levels 38-45

The lava maze spans most of these zones, due north of the Ice Mountain. Many dangerous creatures wander the maze, including King Scorpions, Giants, and aggressive Black Knights. Just north of here is the Runite mine.

Level 40

There is a lava Chasm here, guarded by Lesser Demons.

Level 45

In the far northwestern corner is a glacier where water and cosmic runes spawn. They are guarded by Ice Warriors and Ice Giants.

Levels 46-47

Greater Demons spawn here, at the far northeast corner of the Wilderness, where they guard the Muddy Key Chest; also, there is a sapphire spawn point guarded by Level 31 Spiders due north of Varrock.

Crandor Isle

Crandor Isle is the object of the DragonSlayer Quest, a small island that can only be found by uncovering three pieces of an old map and putting them together. It is the home of the Dragon, as well as Hobgoblins and Skeleton Warriors. There are several rocks scattered over the island that contain ores, and a secret passage to Karamja which you can use after you've killed the Dragon (you must use it from the Crandor Isle side first!).

The Kingdom of Kandarin

Members DungeonFull Map
This HUGE dungeon is for members only. The map shows item spawns and monster locations, along with the monster levels. Thanks a million to Chornaey for this great map!!

Taverly(Druid Town)
This city is rather busy considering its small size. Containing only two shops, (Herblawist, The Two-handed Sword Shop) and most of a quest (The Witches House), this town is devoid of business. It is a good place to work on your Herblaw skill however, as Druids(who drop herbs) inhabit it, and the herblawist stocks a few much needed herblaw items.

The Dark Wizards Tower
Here the evil Dark Wizards congergate, performing they're evil magic. There's your basic lvl 13 wizards at the bottom, and lvl 25's on the next two levels. Good for runes, not much else.

The Crafting Guild(now available to non-members!)
You need level 40 crafting to enter here, but its well worth the work. You get acess to amulet mold, star mold, and necklace mold spawns, as well as a pottery oven and a jug spawn. You also have chisel and hammer spawns. Outside you have some cows, and the Crafting mine.5 gold rocks 5 clay rocks and 5 silver rocks.Upstairs you have the sink,a spinning wheel, and the tanner. (still isn't free)and the Emergency Escape Ladder, which drops you in with the cows.

The Hero's Guild
The Hero's Guild is possibly the most elite guild in all of RuneScape. You need 55 quest points simply to start the heroes quest, and to complete that you need a Thieves Armband, a cooked Lava Eel,and a FireBird Feather. You will be doing much globetrotting for this quest!in the courtyard, you have the Fountain of Heroes, where you can increase the power of your DragonStones. Inside, theres a guy that sells the Dragon Battleaxe,a fireplace for cooking,a ladder to the basement, and a staircase going to the the small Altar Room upstairs. In the basement, you have a blue dragon in a cage, and a small mine. Theres some coal there, and some other ores I can't identify.

The White Wolf Mountains
This rugged area is the home of the White Wolf Pack, and also contains the lair of the Ice Queen, Leader of all frozen creatures. The dungeon with her requires lvl 50 mining to get in, and a pick. It is also the ONLY way to get to the land beyond there from Taverly. The only other ways are too teleport to Camelot,or use the new dock in Brimhaven on Karamja.

Camalot Castle
Camalot Castle is the main location for Merlin's Quest. This castle is located in west Kandarin (beyond the white wolf mountains,) on the north shore. Roaming around are a few Knights, namely Sir Lancelot, a second named knight, and King Authur. There are no combatable NPCs to be had here, and it is mainly for the quest.

Seer's Village
The Seer's Village has many things to offer in the way of fletching and crafting. Located just west of Camalot Castle, this small village is full of non-combat NPCs. It has a bank, a spinning wheel, and a few other notable things. This village is the best spot for working on crafting or fletching because of its close location to a large swarth of new trees, close location to the flax and a spinning wheel, and a bank, with a rather interesting floor. ^_^

Ardougne
This city, though very deep into the members area, is usually full of people. This main reason being that it has all the stalls and NPCs you can pickpocket/steal from. This city seems to have been designed strictly for the thieving skill, and has little else. It sports a few shops, and to its credit is rather spread out. But thieving is still the main thing here. (edit: this city also has a docks, where you may board a ship to Brimhaven)
