Rose From Afar

A rose from afar can be just as sweet

the substance like a fragrance can enter soul

touching your heart ever so subtly

fulfilling a spiritual need with you

leaving an impression that will last a lifetime

the knowledge that you may never savor its sustenance up close

brings to light the need to continue adornment

for this flower of God, rose from afar

Money

Money is the root of all evil

my grandma always said

It's just like opening the pantry

finding weevil in your bread

some measure your love

by what they get when you're dead

the lord only knows how that

notion got into their head

It's the actions when you're living

that show your love

not when you're 6 ft under

and ascended to above

it can buy you goodies

all you want in life

it can make you hate

that person, man or wife

it can make you greedy

more than ever before

even when you're rich

you will want more

you will act indifferent

when you see the poor

you just say that's tough

can't have any of my stuff

get a job you bums

I've nothing for you crusteds

don't stand too close

I'll have you busted!

so you see if you want to

that in the human race

there's quite an upheaval

and money really is the root of all evil!

This

Christmas

end a quarrel

Seek out a forgotten

friend. Dismiss suspicion,

and replace it with trust....

Write a love letter. Share some

treasure. Give a soft answer. Encourage

youth. Manifest your loyalty in

word and deed. Keep a promise. Find the

time. Forgo a grudge. Forgive an enemy. Listen

Apologize if you were wrong. Try to understand.

Flout envy. Examine your demands on others. Think

first of someone else. Appreciate. Be kind; be gentle.

Laugh a little. laugh a little more. Deserve confidence.

Take up arms against malice. Decry complacency. Express your

gratitude. Go to church. Welcome a Stranger. Gladden the heart

of a child. Take pleasure in the beauty and wonder of the earth.

Speak your love. Speak

it again. Speak

it still once

again

Yesterday was history.

Tomorrow is a mystery.

Today is a gift

That's why it's called the Present.

Blessed Friends

(for Todd Kaplan and Delia Anghelescu in celebration of their wedding, August 6, 2000)

In love and honour,
Spirits unite in marriage,
Be cherished and blest

My Love

You make me strong

You make me happy

You comfort me and keep me safe

You give me understanding

And together we make sense

You bring me peace

And fill my emptiness with joy

You help me to believe in possibilities

And trust in who I am

I have faith in you and hopes for us

You are my love

And I will cherish you

For Lara (Have Faith)

I am sorry for the pain that you have been through

A memory of the hurt

I will take the knowledge of what should not be

And trust in love and what is real

I am touched by the sorrow and regrets you have

I will let compassion guide me

I hope your grief will lead to understanding

And our tears shall heal our spirit

I hope your faith will give you courage

And belief in who you are

Untitled poem for Uncle Leo

Auntie, Uncle, Johnny and Angie

I grieve and cry for you

My spirit hurts and aches

I will remember the love you share

And the truth you help me know

And believe

A memory of Uncle Leo atop a lion statue

The joy, the promise, the hopes and dreams

The passion that is you

Your honour and dignity are alive

In this wisdom you have shown me

Know who you are

Know where you have been

Know where you want to go

Uncle, I am sorry our moments together were few

That I do not have a clearer understanding of who you are

From Auntie I am learning

About how your love was true

And how you cared for others

From your pain

I will learn to be compassionate

And from your love

Hope remains
