| The Twilight Circle by Carol Kosloski and Cathryn Kerr |
| This story is a collaboration between the two of us. There was a time, not so long ago, when the vampyric society lived in peace with that of the humans. But now that time is only a memory. Only a short time ago, there were three classes of vampires, that of the Traditionals, the Moderns, and the Guardians. Together they made up a group known as the Twilight Circle. The Traditionals were a group of older vampires. This group saw humans as nothing other than a source of nourishment and a potential for new chosen ones to join the Twilight Circle. They were also known as the Traditionals for their habit of remaining with the traditional ways of drinking blood. They were generally not too eccentric in their ways but a recently emerging group has soiled the name of the Traditionals by their cruel habits of experimenting with fellow vampires. They have been taking newer members of the Twilight Circle off the streets and trying out experiments as to how to remove the need for humans as a part of their diet. Because of this any newer vampires have died and those who survived have avoided the Traditional group and gone with the group known as the Moderns. Still, a few new vampires remain within the group. The Moderns are one of the most radical groups at this time. The group consists mostly of the newer vampires and, although elder vampires are accepted, this group rarely manages to attract any that have been around for more than one hundred years. They respect humans as almost equals and have worked hard to eliminate the blood draining ritual which has been practiced by the Traditionals. The new method involves the draining of life energy with the touch of a finger. The group is led by an older vampire by the name of Matty Digillo who has been around for over 200 years. As with the Traditionals, there are a few more eccentric members of the group. Some have even tried in the past to turn as many humans as possible. But many moderns have forged close bonds with humans, some acting as protectors of a family for many years. The Moderns and the Traditionals have been involved in many fights. Both fight over new members but recently the Moderns have been growing in number and are making plans to overrun the Traditionals in a single swoop. The Moderns have also been working hard to earn the respect of the Traditionals. One of their biggest problems in making the Traditionals understand them is that of their respect for humans. The Guardians are the third group of vampires that has been recently hunted to near nonexistence. Once this proud group kept a harmony between the humans and the vampires by making sure that no vampire took too many lives and that a ratio of humans to vampires stayed in the acceptable range through their contact with the slayers, a group of humans who know about the Twilight Circle and willingly helped to control those who needed it and even kill those who were too chaotic. Recently, a new group of slayers, the Rogue slayers, have emerged. Led by Blaire Denin, they have decided that it is their mission to remove all vampires from the face of the earth. Because of their work, the Modern and Traditional vampires have turned against the Guardians and have been killing them off every time they are discovered. Now only a few remain, hidden within the ranks of the few Traditional slayers that have not given up yet. These few remaining Guardians are gathering what is left of their shattered forces and making an attempt to sweep the Rogue Slayers off the face of the earth. This story and the ones that will come after it are the tales of what happened when these classes meet and the struggle each goes through. But, instead of telling the tale of an entire group of people these stories relate to some of the people who were affected by these struggles, one at a time. Welcome to the Twilight Circle Series. |
