The word recognition has been used in preference to registration. The feeling is that the word recognition best emulates what this website intends to bring and receive, "Discovery". For many Maori especially in cities that is exactly what Maori is, a discovery of something that has never been explained to us, or a part of us we have denied or even been made to feel ashamed of.
This websites primary function is to offer a source of information specific to the Hapu we Whakapapa to, targeting our growing Urban population. With city populations booming, land and resources are becoming more valuable as the urban centres expand.
Land and resources in the rohe(boundaries) of Ngati Aukiwa are having similar interests shown. Dealings with the Crown are at a critical point with Te Tirity O Waitangi claims in the rohe of Ngati Aukiwa. Of great significance is how our assets are managed after settlements are reached with the Crown.
Ngati Aukiwa working party have seen the absolute need to re establish the role of Ngati Aukiwa Hapu in managing lands, sea and resources in a Kaitiaki(caretaker) role. Preserving and protecting for future generations the integrity of Ngati Aukiwa Hapu.
The first stage is comprehensive recording of Uri (descendants) to Ngati Aukiwa, and from that recording give our Hapu based and directed organisation the strongest possible voice.
