My father was involved in Democratic Party politics when he was a school teacher in Miami area, during the time I was born there.  For a short time, he was Rep. Claude Pepper's campaign manager, he and Rep. Pepper were part of a generation of idealists and progressives, some would say, communistic or socialist types, who were directly influenced by Pres. Roosevelt's policies during the post-Depression, 1930's era of active large-scale government involvement in the social welfare and advancement of local communities.

It is unfortunate that today, in the district of Miami where Rep. Pepper was popularly elected, it has been taken over by the very nemesis of progressive politics, namely elements of  the Cuban right-wing exile community which are allied to the reactionary politics of local Republicans, the most arrogant and baneful one of the pack being the so-called  Cuban-American "she-wolf", Ros-Ilena.
