Polar Bears at Risk

ENN - 05/21/07

LONGYEARBYEN -- Time may be running out for polar bears as global warming melts the ice beneath their paws. Restrictions or bans on hunting in recent decades have helped protect many populations of the iconic Arctic carnivore, but many experts say the long-term outlook is bleak. An estimated 20,000-25,000 bears live around the Arctic -- in Canada, Russia, Alaska, Greenland and Norway -- and countries are struggling to work out ways to protect them amid forecasts of an accelerating thaw. "There will be big reductions in numbers if the ice melts," Jon Aars, a polar bear expert at the Norwegian Polar Institute, said by the fjord in Longyearbyen on the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard, about 1,000 km (600 miles) from the North Pole. Unusually for this time of year, the fjord is ice free.

Clean energy claim: Aluminum in your car tank

    MSNBC - 05/17/07

A Purdue University engineer and National Medal of Technology winner says he's ready and able to start a revolution in clean energy. Professor Jerry Woodall and students have invented a way to use an aluminum alloy to extract hydrogen from water a process that he thinks could replace gasoline as well as its pollutants and emissions tied to global warming. But Woodall says there's one big hitch: "Egos" at the U.S. Department of Energy, a key funding source for energy research, "are holding up the revolution." Woodall says the method makes it unnecessary to store or transport hydrogen two major challenges in creating a hydrogen economy.

Congressional panel takes Big Oil to task

    AP News - 05/16/07
    WASHINGTON

While oil companies blame soaring gasoline prices on unexpected refinery shutdowns, Congress is questioning whether industry mergers and investment decisions have erased a supply cushion. The House Judiciary Committees antitrust task force Wednesday opened the first of a number of hearings on oil industry concentration with its chairman noting that gasoline prices have soared well above $3 a gallon and asking, How did we get into this mess?. Oil companies today are enjoying record profits, and while they could use those profits to invest in more production capacity, instead they use the money to buy back shares in the markets, complained Rep. John Conyers Jr., D-Mich., the panels chairman.

Genetically modified foods may be greener than organic ones

    NEWSWEEK International Version - 05/20/07

Farm-raised pigs are dirty, smelly animals that get no respect. They're also an environmental hazard. Their manure contains phosphorus, which, when it rains, runs off into lakes and estuaries, depleting oxygen, killing fish, stimulating algae overgrowth and emitting greenhouse gases. During the 1980s, phosphorus pollution killed all aquatic life in the 42km-long Mariager Fjord of Denmarkan ecological disaster that prompted European governments to impose strict regulations on pig farming. It didn't solve the problem. Doing away with the pig is not an option. Pigs provide more dietary protein, more cheaply, to more people than any other animal. Northern Europe still maintains the highest pig-to-human ratio in the world (2-1 in Denmark), but East Asia is catching up. During the 1990s, pork production doubled in Vietnam and grew by 70 percent in Chinaalong densely populated coastlines, pig density exceeds 100 animals per square kilometer. The resulting pollution is "threatening fragile coastal marine habitats including mangroves, coral reefs and sea grasses," according to a report released in February by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Canada says mad cow case shows risk unchanged

    OTTAWA - Reuters - 05/15/07

Canada's probe into its ninth case of mad cow disease since 2003 shows the case was consistent with previous ones and does not change Canada's overall risk for the disease, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said on Monday. "The detection of this case does not change any of Canada's BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) risk parameters," CFIA said in a statement. The agency said it could not rule out the possibility of cross-contamination of some cattle feed, either during the manufacturing process or in transport, due to lack of records to verify proper rules were followed. "In essence, the case confirms what was already known about an extremely low level of BSE infectivity having existed in Canada's feed system during the late 1990s and early 2000s within a previously determined geographic area and time interval," it said.

Wolfowitz To Attend 2007 Istanbul Bilderberg Meeting

Paul Joseph Watson - Prison Planet - 04/10/07

In an interview with a Turkish journalist, World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz brags of his upcoming attendance of the 2007 Bilderberg Group meeting in Istanbul Turkey, while the journalist who is also set to be an an attendee refers to the elitist confab as a "covert world government." Bilderberg is an annual conference of the global elite, the location of which changes every year. Power brokers from industry, oil, politics, banking, business, academia, royalty and the media get together to secretly discuss the course of the world with no independent oversight or press coverage whatsoever, save leaked details obtained by muck-raking lone journalists like veteran Jim Tucker. Bilderberg claims it does not set policy and yet whatever is discussed usually pans out in the real world within 12 months. The BBC uncovered documents form a former Bilderberg member dating back to the early 50's betraying the fact that the European Union and the single Euro currency were both brainchild's of the Bilderberg Group
