Welcome to the NFCA message board.
NFCA History Message Board
Dear NFCA members,   The space here is created for you to share your memorable NFCA  moments with us.  Let's hear, read actually, them.  The following are parts of the emails that Haiyen Chang and I sent to one another.  I started: "Have you had a chance to visit the NFCA website? It doesn't have a lot.  Being long-time members of NFCA, you two must have a lot of fond memories of the gatherings sponsored by us in the past. Can you help to come up with a historical account of NFCA ?"  Haiyen replied "We'll help you as much as we can about the history of NFCA.  Ask Celestine Wang  to write down the name of the person who started the NFCA and when was it.  It will need several people's brains to complete it. So, let's take time.  Robin and I had a long break (at least 10 years) from the Chinese community due to our heavy involvement with three children's competitive swimming activities.  However, when we did come back, we were the first group to start the Chinese school and had been very involved in the Board of Directors.  Maybe all of us can use a "relay" form to start and complete the whole history. As for "message board", I think it will be a less-serious way of communication among all sides. It will allure people's interest to visit the website. You know, people love to talk and to be heard."
Sincerely,  Leonard

Indeed a history. Here is a link to some hilarious pictures of "cross-adaptation" of Chinese and English Languages that Carl shared with me:

I came to Tallahassee from Norfolk, VA, in August 1984. The rest of my family joined me a couple of months later. I'd like to know the time each member came to Tallahassee especially who is the earliest among the former and the present NFCA members.

As far as I can remember the founder for NFCA was M/M. C.C. Lee(Chang-chien Lee.) In the late 70's he was a ph.D. student at FSU School of Education, also working at FAMU Library. Probably in 1978, 1979 or even later, he and his wife decided to have NFCA. I do not remember he or his wife was the Chair. Later, Lucy became the Chair; I was the Secretary, for many years. We always celebrated the three(3) big festivals: New Year, Dragon Boat Festival and The Mid-Autumn. The Treasurer before Maria was Mr. Cheng-Hong Chin's wife. Haiyan knows her name. The organization was very "loose." A few people met, Lucy cooked the meal for us. We decided what to do. One year we had invited The Mainland Chinese to join with us. We had about 800 people (New Year).

I had the honor to talk to the founder of NFCA, Dr. Chang C. Lee, last week. He sent me a heart-warming letter shortly after and I just got the letter on 11/11/2006. He has confirmed that NFCA was founded in the Fall of 1976, exactly thirty years ago right after he received his Doctoral Degree in Education from FSU. He was elected the very first Chair of NFCA. He left Tallahassee in 1978 to become the Library Director at Behrend College of Pennsylvania State University, Erie. He stated in his letter that NFCA has always been a non-political organization. Chinese, no matter where they came from, are welcome to join. Currently, Dr. Lee resides in Orlando area.

Congratulations to Ms. Sandy Su being elected as new chairperson of NFCA. Hope to see the NFCA continue the good tradition with the new energy under her leadership.
