Golf under the sun

Ron Jones

The weather forecast was for 100% chance of rain for August 17 and, in fact, it was dark and drizzling in the morning. But, before the first foursome teed off at the annual NFB golf tournament, the sun broke through. Unlike last year, when the rain never let up for a moment, we had a beautiful day at the Bromont Golf Course.

In response to requests from last year, the tournament was held on a Friday instead of a week-day, a week later than usual and using the Vegas style of play. 137 golfers participated and 172 diners took part in a great four-course meal. The only complaint was that the wine service slowed down the food service.

We were somewhat disappointed that several Club members who usually play did not join us this year. However 14 members did play and another nine family members joined us for dinner.

As usual, NFB suppliers, with the encouragement of Lew Browne, came across with an abondance of great gifts. There were free door prizes for most and, for the draw, there were TV sets, DVD players, sound systems, VCRS, golf bags, clothing, etc, etc. Some notable winners were: Cheryl Bell who won a TV set, a sound system and a jacket. A second TV set went to Colette Brodeur of the NFB. John Howe, up from New Hampshire, won a trail bike which he pedalled back to his table.

The top golf foursome was that of Lew Browne and three suppliers, Regis Harrison, Francois Hubert and Michael Mihaichuik. Close behind was the foursome of Club members: Andre and Yvette Brunelle, Roland Brideau and Ghislain Arsenault. The prizes were awarded by the NFB's new film commissioner, Jacques Bensimon.

The success of this annual event, organized by NFB-Club-ONF, in collaboration with the Purchasing Department of the NFB depends on many people. I would like to thank Lew Browne and his staff, Olivier Fougres, Michael Hazel, Christiane Gauthier, Elaine Tousignant, Paula Masaites and Rick Brown. Thanks also to Bob Masaites, Gisle Champoux and Monique Hazel.

Compliments were abundant but frequently heard was that of the sponsors, who play many tournaments each year, "I don't know how you do it at such a reasonable price." Whereas most tournaments charge over $100, the Club price for golf, electric cart, gifts and a four-course dinner is $75.

If we have a guarantee from the golf club that meal service will improve, we will probably return to Bromont next year.

lots of photos.
