Back to the races

Ron Jones

It was a brisk November day in Montreal but it was warm and comfortable inside the Hippodrome. The occasion was the second annual visit to the Montreal race track (formerly known as Blue Bonnets). Club members were greeted with a welcome drink and a chance to chat before partaking of a lavish buffet.

Our tables were well situated to see the races and to have easy access to the betting stations (too easy for some of us). The third race was dedicated to NFB-Club-ONF and a dozen members donned their coats and posed with the winning horse and driver.

The NFB Club ONF held a brunch at the Hippodrome de Montral on November 16, 2003.
Here we can see from l. to r. Marcelle Turcotte-Fortier, Ron Jones, Colin Low, Tony Ianzelo, Jacques Gagnon,
the rider, Showcase Hanover, the horse winning the race dedicated to the NFB Club ONF, Denis St-Pierre,
the driver, Laure Gauthier and Claude E. Pelletier, Claire Provenal, Pat de Seguin and Ruby Cormier.

But it was the fifth race that drew most of the excitement from our table. One horse was named Lets Go Mike and, with Toni and Mike McKennirey sitting with us, there seemed to be no other choice for the bet. Lets Go Mike was not a favourite but it must have known that the McKennireys were watching because it won.

Over-all winners for the day included Ann and Anthony Kent and Christiane Gauthier. There were probably others but most didn't discuss their investments. I know that I didn't.

This event has turned out to be a big success with our membership so it looks like we may try our luck again next year.
