Reason for Recommendation:
This was an excellent introduction to working with Celtic magic. It was also an excellent introduction to the ancient Celtic mythologies and history.
General Review:
This is an introductory book on Celtic magic for neopagans and Wiccans. It gives basic information on casting circles, doing magic and general Wicca. As well, there is a fair bit of information on Celtic deities, myths and correspondences, as well as some history of Celtic magic. Conway talks about the ancient Celts, the Druids, and the Dryads. This book contains many rituals, chants and spells for the Sabbats and Esbats, or for practical magical purposes. I felt that this book was an excellent introduction to Celtic myth and legend. My favorite part of the book were Chapter 8: Introduction to the Celts and Chapter 9: Myths and Deities. I also liked the divination section, which dealt with gemstone divination and reading the Ogham alphabet of the ancient Celts, which is much like reading the runes. This is a basic introduction to working with Celtic magic, but pretty extensive for a beginner book. It’s also a good introductory book on magic for beginner pagans. And it can enhance the magical workings of an intermediate or advanced pagan.
