ON 12/26/1941 Harold & his son Roy enlisted in the navy in Des Moines ,IOWA. He was sent to the Great Lakes Naval Station ,transferred to the Philadelbhia Navy Yard,then to Portland ,Maine and then Boston. Harold served as a carpenter on the destroyer tender U.S.S.Prairie and was stationed in Newfoundland. In Augest of 1943 he was sent to Boston and from there to Pearl Harbor. Because of a leg injury,he was returned to Bremerton Navel Hospital and operated on in March of 1944. He was then returned to shore duty in Manchester,Wa. where he remained until October,1944 and was given a medical discharge. He then returned to Mt. Auburn,Ia He also served in WW1 with his brother Walter,Walter was in the "Battle of the Bulge" was supposed to be the bloodiest battle in WW1 |
