Internet access is now available to students. This special connection allows us to provide unique opportunities for information retrieval, resource sharing, and communication.
However, use of the Internet provides not only new opportunities for learning, but also new opportunities for practicing responsible behavior and choices. the use of the Internet is a privilege, not a right, which may be revoked at any time for abusive conduct. This includes, but is not limited to:
*deliberately accessing material inappropriate in nature
*the use of abusive or otherwise objectionable language in either public or private messages
Teachers are responsible for teaching proper techniques and standards for participation, for guiding student access to appropriate uses of technological resources, and for assuring that students understand that if they misuse them, they will lose their access.
Students and all other users of the district's computer resources are responsible for respecting and adhering to local, state, federal, and international laws governing usage of the available technology. Any attempt to violate the provisions of the district's rules and regulations governing usage may result in revocation of user privileges or other disciplinary action appropriate to the circumstances.
An acceptable use policy will be sent home for both student and parent signatures.

Internet access is now available to students and teachers in our school district. The access is offered as part of a collaborative project involving the New York R-IV School District and MoreNet Users Group. Our goal in providing this service is to promote educational excellence by facilitating resource sharing, innovation, and communication.
Along with access to computers and people all over the world comes the availability of material that may not be considered of educational value in a school setting. We have taken precautions to restrict access to controversial materials by teaching students about responsible use.
The use of our district's Internet Connection is a privilege, not a right. Inappropriate use will result in a cancellation of those privileges.
Terms and Conditions
1. Acceptable Use - The purpose of Internet in the New York School is to support research and education in and among academic institutions in the U.S. by providing access to uniqe resources. Internet usage must be in support of education and research and consistent with the educational objectives of the New York School District. Transmission of any material in violation of any U.S. or state regulation is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, threatening, obscene or pornographic materials.
2. Privileges - The use of Internet is a privilege, not a right, and inappropriate use will result in a cancellation of those privileges. Students have been taught that inappropriate use of the Internet will result in suspension of computer use on their part for the rest of the semester and/or year. Students and staff using the District's Internet access will abide by the following regulations:
* Users must respect the privacy of others. Users shall not intentionally obtain copies or modify files, passwords, or data that belong to anyone else. No one should represent themselves as someone else by using another's account. No one should forward communications without prior consent (i.e.: Electronic mail.)
* No advertising for profit is allowed through the network.
* No personal phone numbers or addresses my be included in communications.
* Electronic mail is not guaranteed to be private. Messages dealing with inappropriate or illegal activities will be reported to the appropriate authority.
* Passwords are not to be used by unauthorized individuals. Individuals given the District's passwords will assume responsibility for use of those passwords. ("Logging off" the network after individual use is a MUST.) If a staff member feels that there is a security problem on the network or misuse of a District password, the matter should be reported to the principal or technology coordinator.
* All must abide by existing Federal and State laws in force regarding
electronic communication. This includes accessing information without
authorization, giving passwords out, breaking copyright laws, or causing
a system to malfunction. If there is any doubt regarding the appropriateness
of Internet usage, students should contact their teacher immediately.
INTERNET ACCESS
* Access to the Internet is considered a privilege. Anyone found misusing access will be denied privileges. Additional disciplinary action may also be taken beyond revocation of computer privileges.
* Teachers wishing to link to outside sites as part of their instructional lessons must thoroughly check all material and links prior to student usage.
* The content of each school's server will be supervised by the district technology coordinator and principal. Student projects posted on school district servers must be approved by the district technology coordinator or principal.
3. Netiquette - (Internet Etiquette) - You are expected to abide by the generally accepted rules of your network etiquette.
* Do not reveal your personal address, phone number, or credit card number.
* Do not write or send abusive messages to others. Use appropriate language. Do not swear, use vulgarities, or any other inappropriate language.
4. Vandalism - Vandalism will result in cancellation of privileges. Vandalism is defined as any malicious attempt to harm or destroy data of the Internet. This includes, but is not limited to, uploading or creation of computer viruses.
Acceptance of Terms and Conditions
All terms and conditions as stated in this document are applicable to the New York R-IV School District. These terms and conditions shall be governed and interpreted in accordance with the laws of the State of Missouri and the United States of America. Any student may apply for Internet usage. To do so, you must complete the attached application. Students should return the contract to the school office where the application will be kept on file. You may retain this copy of the policy for your files.
