Psycho Babble Wednesday 7.24.98 1226pHST

I didn't really think I would be doing anything today but laze around and watch TV. As it turned out I ended up at the beach getting a horrid cris-cross tan on my back. The water was super cold but it was nice dryin off in the sun. I put on half a bottle of SPF 50......I don't get why I got sun burned.

I bought the CABARET 1998 broadway cast recording at JELLY'S. So far the music is ok(faves so far: Willkommen & "The Pineapple Song"), but nothing to gah-gah over like the first time I listened to RENT or RAGTIME. I'll eventually lead up to my RAGTIME experience with the STOKESMEISTER in NY but I'm still working on:

NY 7.1.98 -- We were supposed to go to the EMPIRE for the boys first day there but we started walking towards uptown and ended up in TIMES SQUARE. The reason why I wanted to walk a little was to get the boy used to the city. The crowded streets, the buildings, the sounds, the people. A sort of "intro" to the main act. So we walked up seventh ave and ended up in Times Square. Jon grabbed like three fliers from "passer-outers"(is there a technical name?).......I tend to forget sometimes that these guys are paid to pass out fliers. I asked someone once, "why don't they just dump the fliers in a garbage can and take the rest of the day off?" The reply was, "it just doesn't work that way". Hmph.

We were hungry. We ate at the ALL-STAR. It was almost empty, although you wouldn't think so with the loud blarring music and multiple televisions tuned to various sports stations. There were two businessmen that looked like they were having a meeting in there....WTF?....what a place to have a meeting. It was a brunch hour. You should have seen the place when we left....a whole slew of people waiting for a seat. The boy and I felt bad when we took turns using the bathroom. We forgot to bring a dollar to tip the bathroom attendant. Some girl in there was spraying CK BE(among the many-many perfumes provided in the restroom for your use) on herself.....like the whole bottle or something.....WHEW!! COUGH-COUGH!

After lunch we planned to go to MISS LIBERTY. We took the subway to the WTC and walked from there. The boy enjoyed the subway. Then we got lost trying to find BATTERY PARK. We were in the Battery Park "AREA". We were lost for like an hour. Looking for someplace near the water with trees. Very hallarious. We EVENTUALLY ended up at the park. Thank god. While in line for the Ferry the same people I saw perform last year at Washington Square were entertaining. I remembered the masked black acrobatic contortionist.

The crown was closed. So we couldn't walk up. The boy wanted to. Poor thing. Here are the lines just to get to the pedestal. I had mixed feelings about the crown. It would have taken 3-4 hours if it were open. Ugh. It's good to try it ONCE. I dunno. Oh well.

When we got inside the base of the pedestal there was a wait for the elevator. A long wait. We could have taken the stairs. Ninety-something steps. One of the employees said "ladies and gentlemen, you can take the stairs, ninety(something) steps, the walk is very easy!". Convinced, the boy and I took the stairs to the top of the pedestal. The bitch was a liar. Half-way there we were thirsty and our legs hurt. We still felt the pain in our legs the next day.

The visit to Miss Liberty was nice despite the walk up to the pedestal. We stayed there for two hours. Later that day we went to the top of the WTC. The boy loved it. He agreed that it was the best place in the world to be. Ahh, I love him even more now.

We ate dinner at a random fast food restuarant. We went back to my cousins. Good first day in the city. Very good.
