I, Chata Addy, am a gifted musician from Ghana, West Africa. I come from a long tradition of master drummers and dancers from Ghana. I was taught to dance and play drums by my father, Tete Kojo Addy, a much-respected composer, drummer, and dancer. For many years, I performed with my father's ensemble, Red Boneh (which won the Ghanaian National Dance Competition). I have also performed with my uncles, Yukubu and Obo Addy.
Currently I perform solo shows that include traditional dances, the talking drum, three-Conga drum, and other percussion instruments. I also teach West African drumming classes for adults and for children, as well as leading my own band, SUSUMA (In my native language of Ga, susuma means soul.).
SUSUMA plays Afro-Reggae, Funky Highlife music. I am the lead vocalist and songwriter. SUSUMA is an upbeat blend of traditional African and contemporary music styles with rhythms that make people want to dance!
We perform in the Portland (Oregon) area for clubs, weddings, festivals, and other special occasions. The full band consists of up to 8 members at a time: myself on Congas with some unbelievable musicians on saxophone, guitar, keyboards, bass, and drums, with additional guitar and conga.
I have two CD's available. My solo album is titled The Children. My other album is with SUSUMA, titled This is What I Feel.
I would be happy to speak with you about my music. I am available for solo performances and I am available with my band, SUSUMA.
