September Letter

Grade One is a whole new beginning full of changes-new friends, new teachers, new classrooms. The biggest change of all is going to school ALL day!

We will be learning all kinds of new things this year. Most importantly, we will be reviewing the letters and the sounds that they make and then putting it all together to begin reading. At home, families can help by reading to and WITH their child each day, and encouraging your child to write and draw. All that you need is a few books from the library, a few pieces of paper, some crayons and pencils. What could be easier? It is important to note that just like learning to walk, not all children learn to read at the same time. Be patient and it will happen. We will also be learning about numbers, addition and subtraction, graphing, patterns, time, money, measurement and classifying. It looks like we will be busy.

As we now spend the whole day at school, we are in and out of the school a fair bit. It is required that you send a pair of inside shoes to school with your child. These shoes will be kept in the classroom and worn in the class and in the gym. Please try to send shoes that are comfortable, that fir properly, that are easy to take on and off, and that are suitable for running in the gym. Light coloured soles are preferable as black soles leave marks on the hallway floors and in the gym. This also helps keep our classroom much tidier.

In a few weeks, I'll send home information regarding our daily schedule, homework, reading and math programs and our Home Reading Program. Until then, you are free to ask me any questions that you may have and I will do my best to answer them fully.

Please feel free to call me at the school if you have any concerns or want to meet with me. I'm looking forward to a wonderful year with your child!

Mrs. Teague
