Accident

December 23rd 2001. One day after my graduation party.
I was sit in the back seat, without safety belt.
It was snowing that day. We were too fast. Bad combination.

This is a brand new Peugeot 206:

And this is the one I was inside... When you face the death you start to
think more about life and you re-evaluate you values. This is the second
time I face death. The first time was when I was 17 and my mom
got cancer with metastasis.

But this time I learnt a "curious" thing about dying. Depending on how
you die you really do not feel anything. In the first impact (against the guard rail)
I got unconscious. About 10 minutes later, when I woke up and after some
confusion, I felt pain and happiness. "Broken, but still alive" I think I thought...

I broke nine bones in total. Below you can see where. The red marks
show the broken bones and the blue marks show the superficial wounds.

The most serious superficial wound was the laceration of the left side of
my skull where I received about 15 stitches (a suture) to gather all the skin back.
The doctors did a really great job! Today it's even hard to find the scars under my hair.

The X-ray of some broken ribs...

The most serious fracture: my left arm. Now is almost 100%.

Eight days after the accident I went to Brazil with Monica.
In the first two weeks I felt pain even in breathing.
This picture was taken in front of my grandmother's place in
Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro.

This was taken in São Paulo with Mariane, João's sister.

This is also in São Paulo in my father's place. Here you see
my two little brothers (Bruno and Carlos) and my little sister Nubia.

To make this page about the accident more complete
I'm still trying to get the pictures I took in the hospital,
in the day after. I remember I looked like Rocky Balboa at the
end of Rocky II...

Enjoy your life, you never know when you have to leave...
