The coast!
More coast!

The road from Carmel down the coast is very windy, thin and hilly. Unfortunately the morning we were travelling was foggy so the views weren't the best. It did however add a bit of 'edge' to the journey and gave us some interesting effects. There is a chance of seeing whales, sea lions and otters off the coast, but the weather wasn't helpful at all. We think we may have seen something in the water at one of our clearer moments, but as to whether it was a whale or a sea lion is up for debate.

Another fun and unexpected encounter on the road was the K-mart man. A homeless guy pushing his K-mart trolley up the wrong side of the road into on-coming traffic. At least though he seemed to try to move off the road. Not like the other one following on. This mad guy had two trollies, and was pushing them both, up hill, on the wrong side of the road, with a determined look in his eye. He avoided getting hit, thanks to Santana's evasive driving. My how we laughed! Anyhoo, more scenery.
We got to a whole strip of motels, and Santana and Suzanne thought that an ocean view would be nice, as we were there anyway. However the rooms didn't 'feel' right, or were over priced. Across the road there were more motels (not offering a view of the ocean) so we went to check them out too. I stayed in the car while the ladies went to suss out the rooms available. Eventually, success! It was upstairs, facing the water, and sounded nice. It was! The largest room we had on the whole trip. Fireplace, large couch, table, balcony with as good a view of the ocean as we could have hoped for, considering the fog, and the time of night. We went for dinner in a fish resturaunt nearby that the receptionist said was nice. (It was too) Back to the room and after consultations on the plans for visiting Hearst Castle the next morning we retired to bed. The fog had lifed by morning and it provided us with a lovely bright and early start to the day. We set off for Hearst Castle about quarter to eight.
Onwards and upwards...
