Based loosely in and around Reading, Berkshire, UK and being recently formed, THE NEWTOWNERS bring together three long-time advocates of American roots music. Although in this line up Colm, Stu and Fiona play fiddle, guitar and banjo respectively, we are adept at swapping around. Mostly we play Old Time (pre Bill Monroe Bluegrass and Carter Family Country) that still survives to this day in remote areas of the Appalachian Mountains, but all too often derisorily referred to as hillbilly music. As per the influx of settlers into the Appalachians in the 17th and 18th centuries expect connotations of Scottish, English and Irish tunes all mixed together with rhythms reminiscent of Native Indians and Afro-Americans. The film 'Oh Brother Where Art Thou' made this genre very popular of late, and now THE NEWTOWNERS will bring it to you in person. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
