Spot's Reputation by Kit

It's been a few months since the strike, and things were going great in New York. The Newsies were back to selling their papes at the regular price and there were even a few girls that had joined after the strike. One of the first girls to join the newsies was Katherine Knalle, but everyone just called her Kit. She had only been with the newsies for a couple months, but she knew everyone pretty well.

It was a bright sunny day in Manhattan and all the newsies were out selling their papes. Kit was selling with Mush, who was one of her closest friends. It was around lunchtime, so they decided to head on over to Tibby's.

When they arrived, most of the newsies were already there. Mush and Kit grabbed their usual booth by the window. Boots and Kid Blink came over and sat across from them. The two of them seemed to be very excited about something.

"Hiya boys! How's it goin?" Kit asked.

"Great! How was sellin today?" Blink replied.

"Pretty good" Kit and Mush said in unison.

"We was just talkin to Jack earlier an he said dat Spots visiting today!" Boots said excitedly.

Kit had never met Spot Conlon because he hadn't been back to Manhattan since the strike.

"Is that the Spot Conlon from Brooklyn that you guys are always talkin about?"

"Sure is! He's just stayin for da day though. I think he's here to take care of some business, but he's also visiting with us. We'll introduce ya to him when he gets here."

When Blink said this, Mush started to remember what Spot was like and the affect he had on girls, and started to worry.

"Now Kit, I gotta warn ya though. This guy's pretty tough, an on top of that, he's quite da lady's man, but I don't want u getting mixed up wit him. Ok?"

"Don't worry, Mush. I know how to take care of myself." Kit replied.

Just then, Jack and David walked in with a boy that Kit didn't recognize. He was shorter then them and looked kinda scrawny, but there was something about him that made him look respectable. He wore suspenders and carried a long cane and slingshot. All of the newsies went over and greeted them, and Jack walked over to Kit's booth.

"Hiya fellas! Sorry we're late. We ran into da Delancy bruddas on da way over here." Jack said apologetically.

"Yeah, but we soaked em good!" Spot said proudly, walking over to the booth.

Kit couldn't help giggling at the thought of this scrawny, yet handsome guy soaking the Delancy brothers. Spot glared at her, but decided not to say anything. Jack realized that Spot and Kit had never met before, so he introduced them.

"Spot, this is our friend Kit, she's a newsie too. And Kit, this is Spot Conlon. He's da leader of da Brooklyn newsies."

"A newsie, huh?" Spot said sarcastically. "I aint never heard of no goil newsies before."

"And what's so wrong with that?" Kit replied.

"Well, bein a newsie is a tough job. I'd think a goil would wanna work at something less dangerous."

"And I'd think da leader of Brooklyn would be a little bigger, but you don't see me complaining about it."

Spot was taken back by this remark. Most people knew better then to push him around. He started to get angry.

"Jacky boy, you better tell your little friend here to watch it. She don't know who she's talkin to."

"Has he always been this egotistical?" Kit whispered to Mush.

"What did you just say?" Spot snapped before Mush could answer.

Jack tried to calm down Spot, but Kit had already had enough of this. She got up to leave and turned towards Mush, Boots, and Kid Blink.

"Guys, I've lost my appetite. I'm gonna head back to the Lodging House."

"Alright. Do you want me to come with you?" Mush said.

"No Thanks; I'll see ya guys later." Kit said and left Tibby's.

Later that day, Kit was sitting on her bed in the Lodging House, reading a book. She had to sleep in the room with all of the other newsboys, but she was used to it by now. She shared a bunk bed with Bumlets, who snored a lot, but she got to sleep on the bottom bunk. She heard someone coming up the stairs and saw Mush walk in. He sat down on the bed next to her.

"Hey. Sorry about Spot today. He tries to act tough, but once you get know him, he's a good guy." He said, trying to cheer her up.

"It's alright." Kit replied. "I guess you were right when you told me he was a tough guy earlier." She said laughing.

"Yeah, well at least I don't have to worry about you fallin for him." Mush said jokingly.

Kit just laughed, and Mush left the room. That night she was thinking about Spot Conlon and what happened that day at Tibby's. She wondered if the two of them would get into another fight if they ever met again. She had a hard time sleeping in-between her thoughts and Bumlet's snoring, but she finally fell asleep from exhaustion.

A couple of months had past since Kit met Spot in Tibby's. She decided not to sell any newspapers that day and visit her friend Molly, who lived in Brooklyn. Molly and Kit had been friends for a long time and since Kit became a newsie, they didn't get to see each other as often anymore. Molly worked with her mother in a clothing factory in Brooklyn.

When Kit arrived at her house, Molly was very surprised to see her. They talked for hours about what had been going on in their lives. Kit told Molly about her new job and all of the newsies. She told her stories about Mush, and Jack, and the Delancy brothers. It started getting late, so Kit said goodbye to Molly and started walking home.

Kit had almost reached the Brooklyn Bridge when she felt that someone was following her. She started to quicken her pace. It was dark out now and Kit had forgotten how dangerous Brooklyn could be at night.

"Hiya toots" said a low voice creeping up behind her.

She quickly turned around. To her surprise, it was Oscar Delancy. She had no idea why he was in Brooklyn, but she did not intend on finding out.

"Where ya headed off to so fast?" said the other Delancy brother as he jumped out in front of her.

She started to run, but the Delancys were fast and quickly caught up to her and chased her into a dark alley. Kit stopped running and turned towards them ready to fight. They started to close in on her. She pulled her right arm back and threw her fist at Oscar's face. He touched his lip and saw a drop of blood on his finger.

"U'se shouldn't a done dat..." Oscar said and threw her up against the wall.

Kit tried to free herself from his tight grip, but he was too strong. She could hear Morris laughing a few feet away. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a figure jumped out and tackled Morris to the ground. Going to help his brother, Oscar loosened his grip on Kit and threw her down. As she landed, she banged the back of her head against a large box, knocking her unconscious.

Kit slowly opened her eyes. She was lying in a bed, in a room that she was not familiar with. When she sat up, she felt a throbbing pain in the back of her head.

"Oh, your finally awake!" a voice said.

When she looked up, she saw a boy, who looked about 15, walking over to the bed. He was tall with dark blonde hair.

"What happened? Where am I?" She said, touching the bandage on her head.

"You'se in da Brooklyn Lodging House. I'se Roller. You had a run-in with da Delancy bruddas and hit your head, but I soaked em. I brought ya back here so you could get betta."

She sat there for a moment, trying to recollect what had happened earlier that night, but the last thing she could remember was visiting her friend Molly.

"You'se got a name?" the boy asked smiling.

"Yeah, it's Kit. I'm one of the newsies in Manhattan" She replied. "I came to Brooklyn to see a friend, but that's all I can remember."

"Oh, so you'se a friend of Jack Kelly, huh? I'll send one of our newsies over tomorrow to tell him where you are. You'se can just stay here till ya feel betta."

"Ok, thanks." Kit said. "I think I'm gonna go to sleep now if you don't mind. My head still hurts a little."

"Sure, it's gettin kinda late. See ya in da mornin' Kit."

"Goodnight, Roller."

Roller walked over to an empty bunk bed and got it. Kit looked around the large room with all the bunk beds full of sleeping newsies. She herself was lying in a bunk bed. The bed next to hers was a single bed though, and there was a night stand on the other side of it. She couldn't see the boy who was sleeping in it, though. A few minutes later, she finally fell asleep.

"Come on, Spot! Wake up! We got papes to sell!" Roller said happily. Spot groaned and slowly opened his eyes.

"I'm up, I'm up" he said sitting up in his bed, yawning.

All of the newsies were starting to wake up now. Some were already getting ready in the bathroom. Kit was still fast asleep, but no one seemed to notice that she was there. Spot got out of bed, still half-asleep and went to get ready for work. When he came back, he noticed the girl sleeping in the bed next to him.

"Roller, get over here!" Spot said to the boy coming out of the bathroom.

"What is it Spot?" he asked.

"What's dat goil doin sleepin in my Lodgin House without me knowing?" Spot asked confused.

"She ran into da Delancys last night and got hurt, so I brought her back here. It'll only be till she feels betta, if dats all right with you, Spot."

"Well, I guess so, but only until she feels betta." He said, too tired to argue about it.

When Kit woke up, there were a few newsies still in the room. The only one she recognized was Roller. He came over with a bowl of soup on a tray and set in on her bed.

"Here, eat this. It'll make ya feel betta." He said smiling.

"Thanks!" Kit said, and started eating the soup.

"Our kloppman said for you to stay in bed today and rest. I'm gonna stay here with you to make sure your taken care of." Roller said happily.

"Ok!" she replied, smiling.

The two of them talked for hours and got to know each other. That night Kit fell asleep before Spot came back.

The next morning, Kit got up early before the other boys and went into the bathroom to get ready. She was going to try and sell papes in Brooklyn today. She saw that her cut was almost healed, and took the bandage off her head. She brushed her teeth, washed up, and quickly got dressed. When she came out of the bathroom, a lot of the boys were awake now.

"So, if your feeling betta, do you wanna sell papes wit me today?" asked Roller, walking over to her.

"Sure, I'll just wait downstairs for you." Kit said.

She walked out of the room, getting a few double glances from some of the boys who were seeing her for the first time. Spot also saw her for the first time. He thought that she looked familiar, but shrugged it off. He also though that she was very pretty without the bandage on her head.

When Roller was ready and came downstairs, he and Kit got their papes and walked around selling them. Selling in Brooklyn was not that different from selling in Manhattan, except the people weren't as friendly. When they finished selling all their papes, they headed back to the Lodging house. When they got there, they sat down on the bench outside of the Lodging House.

"So, how did you like your first time sellin in Brooklyn?" Roller asked.

"It was...different." Kit replied, and they both shared a laugh.

"It's too bad your leavin tomorrow. I've been havin fun wit you."

"Yeah, same here. You should come visit me in Manhattan! The guys are really nice." She said.

"Maybe I will. I think I'm gonna go inside. You comin'?"

"Nah, I think I'm gonna sit out here a little longer." Kit said to Roller.

"Ok, well I'll see ya later." He said waving and went inside.

"See ya" Kit replied.

She sat on the bench outside the Lodging House and was thinking about a lot of things. Just then, she saw Spot Conlon walking towards the Lodging House. She had completely forgotten that he was the leader of the Brooklyn newsies and was surprised that she hadn't seen or heard of him while staying there. She remembered the fight they had when they first met, and was afraid he would not be too happy to see her, so she looked away hoping that he wouldn't notice her.

"So, you must be da goil dat Roller saved."

Kit looked over and saw Spot practically standing over her. She started to get a little nervous.

"Uhh...yeah, that's me." She said, looking up at him.

"You look kinda familiar. Have we met before?" Spot asked her.

"No! I mean... at least I don't think so." Kit said nervously. She wanted to start off on a clean slate with Spot. Besides, she thought to herself, it would be better if he didn't remember them arguing at Tibby's.

"Oh. Well in dat case, da names Spot Conlon. I'm da leader of da newsies here."

"Nice to meet you Spot!" Kit said, starting to stand up. "Well, I'd better head on inside; it's getting kinda late and..."

"Wait!" Spot said, gently grabbing her arm before she could leave. "I didn't catch ya name."

Kit hesitated, afraid that if she told him, then he would remember her and get angry.

"Well?" Spot said, waiting for an answer.

"Kit...my name's Kit." She replied.

"See, now was that so hard?" Spot said with a nice smirk on his face.

Kit just smiled. She wasn't as nervous anymore because she knew that Spot really didn't remember her. She sat back down on the bench, and Spot sat down next to her.

"So, I take it you'se feelin betta?" Spot asked.

"Yeah, I'm lucky Roller was there to help me." She said still smiling.

"I'm getting kinda hungry. You'se wanna go get some dinner wit me?"

"Sure, I haven't eaten anything since this morning!" Kit replied.

Spot and Kit got up and walked to a local restaurant. After they finished eating, they went back to the Lodging House. It wasn't late and everyone was still awake. When they came upstairs, some of the boys started to whistle, but Spot gave them his famous "Don't even think about it" look and they quickly stopped. They walked over to the boys playing poker. Roller was playing with them.

"Hiya boys, mind if we join ya?" Spot asked.

"Sure, we could use a few more players!" Roller said.

Spot brought over a couple chairs and he and Kit sat down. They played for a while. Roller wasn't very good at poker, so he went out first. Then Shorty went out, and then Mooch, and Spot. Kit was very good at poker and ended up winning the game.

"I can't believe ya beat me! Usually nobody's dat good!" Spot said trying not to smirk. "I call a rematch!"

"Nah, I'm kinda tired." Kit said laughing. "Maybe tomorrow...oh wait, I forgot! I can't tomorrow cuz I'm goin back to Manhattan."

"You'se can just stay anudda night if ya want" Roller said.

"Thanks, but I should probably leave tomorrow, the boys probably miss me." Kit said.

She thought she saw Spot looked a little disappointed by this but she forgot about it.

"Ok well I'm gonna go to sleep now. Goodnight! Kit said and went over to her bed.

The rest of the newsies decided to go to bed too. It was very late and they had to sell papers in the morning. Shorty turned out the light and got in bed.

Spot went over to his bed, took his hat, boots, and shirt off, and hopped in. It was very dark but he could still make out Kit lying in the bed next to him. He watched her sleep, and thought to himself "wow, she sure is pretty, and smart too. I wish she didn't have ta leave tomorrow." He sighed and turned over on his side with his back facing her, and fell asleep.

The next morning, Kit woke up with the rest of the newsies and got ready to head back to Manhattan.

"Roller, I'm gonna head back to Manhattan. Thanks for everything!" Kit said, giving him a big hug.

"Sure, come back anytime ya like!" He said smiling.

"Hey, do you know where Spot is? I wanted to say goodbye to him." She asked.

"I think he must have gone to the distribution office already. He wasn't in his bed when I woke up."

"Oh, ok. Well, could you tell him I said goodbye?"

"Sure, no problem!" Roller said.

"Thanks. See ya!" Kit said and went downstairs.

When she got back to Manhattan, Kit saw Race and Kid Blink selling their papes in Central Park. She ran up to them they gave her a big hug.

"Hey Kit! We heard what happened! We're so glad your allright. How did Spot treat ya? If he tried ta do anything to ya, I'll soak him!" Race said.

"Don't worry, I'm fine, and Spot was a perfect gentleman...except when I beat him at a game of poker!" Kit said laughing.

"Wow! You beat Spot Conlon in Poker! He's da best player in Manhattan!" Race said in surprise.

After talking for a little bit, the three of them went back to the Lodging house and Kit was greeted by all the newsies. By that night, her head was feeling a lot better and she couldn't wait to sell papes the next morning with all of her friends in Manhattan.

About a week went by and Kit couldn't get that charming Brooklyn leader out of her head. She didn't say anything to Mush about it though because he had warned her before not to fall for him. She tried not to think about Spot because she had heard about how he went from one girl to the next and was afraid of getting hurt, so she kept herself occupied as much as possible. Kit sold all of her papes with Mush that day and then they went and had lunch at Tibby's. A few of the newsies started to play poker and Mush joined them, so Kit went back to the Lodging House by herself. When she got to the Lodging House, no one was there. She decided to write down a song that was stuck in her head all day, so she climbed up the stairs, singing cheerfully. When she opened the door and walked in, she ran right into Spot Conlon.

"Oh, so you'se da one singin dat song. I was wondering who it was." Spot said with a smirk on his face, still holding her. "You'se a pretty good singer."

"Thanks" Kit said blushing. She was very shy when it came to singing in public, especially with Spot. That's when she noticed that Jack and David were also in the room with them.

"So how ya been, Kit? How's ya head feelin?" he asked, gently releasing her from his embrace.

"I've been pretty good. My head feels fine now, but what are you doin here?" Kit asked with a confused look on her face.

" Da Manhattan an Brooklyn newsies are all gonna get together and go see Medda sing tomorrow night an Spots here to make plans wit us." Jack said happily.

"Oh, that's great! I haven't seen Medda perform yet, so this outa be fun!" Kit said grinning. Just then she realized that she didn't have anything to wear to the show. "Oh I better go; I have to see my friend Molly about a dress for tomorrow night. Is it allright if I invite her to come along?" Kit asked.

"Sure! The more the merrier!" David said smiling.

"Great, well I'll probably end up spending the night at her house, so I'll see you guys at the show tomorrow night." She said to them.

"Ok, just be sure to be there at 7:00. We'll save a seat for you and your friend up front." Jack said.

"Allright thanks. See ya boys! Nice seein ya again, Spot." Kit said, smiling.

"You too, an you'se be careful. I don't wanna sees anything happen to ya like last time." Spot said with a serious look on his face.

"Don't worry, see ya boys tomorrow!" Kit said and left the Lodging House.

When she arrived at the house, Molly's mother answered the door.

"Kit! How nice to see you! Come in, come in. How's everything?" Her mother asked, greeting her with a big hug. Molly's mother was like an aunt to Kit.

"I'm great; I'm selling papers with the newsies in Manhattan. They're all great! How are you?" Kit asked.

"Good, I'm keeping myself busy...Molly! Come downstairs. Kit's here!" She shouted up the staircase.

Molly came running down the stairs and gave Kit a hug. She was very happy to see her again. Molly came from a wealthy family, and so did Kit before her mother died and her father moved to New Jersey. She had chosen to stay in New York because it was the only home that she had ever known. Her and Molly walked into the parlor room and sat down on the foyer.

"So, what brings you here, Kit?" Molly said cheerfully.

"All of the newsies from Manhattan and Brooklyn are going to see Medda Larkson perform tomorrow night at Irving Hall and I was wondering if you wanted to come along with me." Kit said smiling.

"Ok, it sounds like fun. Did you want to spend the night here too?" Molly asked politely.

"Yes, if it's not too much trouble. I was wondering if you had an extra dress that I could wear for tomorrow night too." Kit asked.

"Sure, I have one that would look great on you, and if you don't like it, then you can just pick another one out since we wear the same size." Molly said happily.

The next night, the two of them went upstairs to Molly's room and started trying on dresses. The one that Molly gave Kit to wear was a light lavender colored dress that hung slightly off of her shoulders and was the perfect length so that you could just see her shoes. Kit looked gorgeous in the dress and the color went great with her long brown curls and her soft fair skin. Molly, who had beautiful dark brown hair, put on a green dress to bring out her big green eyes.

"Are you sure this isn't too much make-up?" Kit asked Molly. She had always felt uncomfortable with make-up on.

"You look great! Everything's perfect! How do I look?" Molly asked and turned around once.

"Absolutely wonderful! I just hope I don't wreck anything!" Kit said, and they both laughed.

"So, do you have any handsome newsie friends that will be attending the show tonight?" Molly asked giggling.

Kit laughed out loud at this. "Oh, Molly. Believe me; you have never seen so many handsome boys in your life. They may be a little scuffed up, but I'm sure they will be cleaned up for the show."

"Is there anyone in particular that you're looking forward to seeing tonight?" Molly asked with a mischievous grin on her face.

"Well, there is one boy. He's the leader of the Brooklyn newsies and I haven't been able to get him off my mind. I think I might actually be falling in love with him, but I'm a little bit afraid to. I've heard that he always has lots lf girls falling for him, so I wanna be careful." Kit explained to her.

"I wouldn't worry. I'm sure he feels the same way about you. You just point him out to me when we go tonight. I'll be able to tell by the end of the night what his intentions are towards you." Molly said reassuringly.

When Kit and Molly arrived at Irving Hall, they saw Jack and Sarah waiting outside for them. The place was packed with a huge crowd of newsies, most already inside waiting for the show to start. Kit introduced them to Molly, and they all went inside. Their table was in the very front of the theater and Spot and David were already there, saving the seats for them. When they saw Kit, their mouths dropped open and they had a stunned look on their faces. This was the first time she had worn a dress in front of the newsies. She waved hello to David and Spot gave her a hug with a big grin on his face.

"Wow, you look gorgeous Kit." He whispered into her ear.

"Thanks." She said pulling back and smiling. "This is my friend Molly. Molly, this is Spot Conlon. He's da leader of da Brooklyn newsies, and that's David. He's Sarah's brother." Kit said introducing them.

Molly and David seemed to like each other. Jack sat on the end with Sarah on the corner next to him. David sat on Molly's left side and Kit sat to her right, and Spot pulled up a chair next to Kit. They ordered their drinks and then the curtains opened and Medda walked out onstage. The whole crowd went wild. She started singing a cheerful upbeat song and all of the newsies sang along with her.

"Your friend David is so nice; I'm having such a great time. And Spot's really cute! You should tell him how you feel tonight!" Molly whispered to Kit.

"Shh...I don't know, I'll think about it." Kit said, afraid of getting hurt.

The next song that Medda sang was very humorous and Kit's whole table couldn't stop laughing. They were having a great time. Suddenly Kit felt a hand on her shoulder and realized that Spot has just put his arm around her. When she looked over at him, he was looking deep into her eyes. She blushed a little and they both smiled at each other. They continued to watch the rest of the show. When Medda finished singing, everyone stood up and clapped for her. Then the newsies started leaving to go home.

"Hey, Kit!" Molly said touching Kit's arm to get her attention. "David's going to walk me home. You can just wear the dress back to the Lodging house and return it to me later."

"Ok, thanks. Have a good night!" Kit said, giving Molly a hug and Molly left with David.

Then Kit felt a tap on her shoulder, and caught up in the moment, she whipped around, lost her balance, and fell into Spot's arms. He quickly caught her around her waist, laughing.

"I was gonna say if ya ready, I'll walk ya home." Spot said smirking.

"Ok, yeah I'm ready." Kit said laughing.

Her and Spot said goodbye to the newsies, left Irving Hall, and headed towards the Manhattan Lodging House.

"Don't you have to walk all the way back to Brooklyn tonight?" Kit asked concerned.

"Nah, I'm just gonna spend da night here. It's too long of a walk to go all da way back to Brooklyn at this time of night." Spot said.

Oh, Allright then. Kit said, trying to conceal her happiness, but couldnt help smiling.

Just then, Spot slowly moved his hand over hers and held it while they walked. Kit was starting to fall for him more and more, and it was getting harder and harder to hold back from Spot Conlon's charm. When they finally reached the Lodging House, Spot stopped Kit from going inside and pulled her close to him.

"I had a really good time tonight, Kit." He said to her with his arms around her waist.

"Me too, you're a lot of fun to be with" Kit said, resting her hands against his chest.

Then before she could think of anything else, Spot leaned in and kissed her. At first she struggled a little bit, but she decided to give in. It was very soft and Kit had to hold onto him for fear of getting weak at the knees. When they parted, Spot hugged her and they went inside.

When they came inside, a lot of the newsies were already there. They were all running up the stairs to play craps. Then Kit saw Mush sitting at the table and wanted to say hi.

"C'mon, I bet I can beat ya at this game!" Spot said, leading her up the stairs.

"I'll be up in a little while. I gotta talk with someone." Kit said and so Spot shook his head and went up the stairs with the other guys. Mush was sitting at the table by himself when she came over and sat down next to him.

"I didn't see ya at Medda's tonight. Did you go?" Kit asked him.

"Yeah, but I sat way up in da balcony wit Blink. Da view is much betta from up there." Mush said smiling. "You sho' look different all gussied up! I hardly even recognized ya!"

"Yeah, well don't worry. Tomorrow, I'll be back in my usual clothes, ready to carry da banner!" Kit said laughing.

"So, what's goin on between you an Spot Conlon? You his goil or something?" Mush asked with a smirk.

"No way!" Kit said trying not to blush. "Me and Spot Conlon?! You were the one who even told me to stay away from him."

"Ok, ok." Mush said. "I know I told you dat, but dat was a while ago. And you shouldn't always go by my opinion only. I hate to admit it, but sometimes I can be a little bit overprotective of ya."

"A LITTLE bit! Try a lot!" Kit said laughing. Mush laughed too.

"Yeah, but your like a little sister to me, so I can't help it sometimes." Mush said patting her on the back.

"Yeah, I know. And you've been like a brother to me. You're the best friend I've had, besides Molly." Kit said and gave Mush a hug.

"Hey, I'm gonna go up and see if I can get a spot in dat craps game. You comin?" Mush said standing up.

"Nah, I'm gonna stay down here for a little while." Kit said.

"All right. Don't stay up too late." Mush said kidding around and went up the stairs.

Kit sat there for a while thinking and trying to make sense of her feelings for Spot. She decided that not all of what she heard could be true and that she shouldn't let it stand in the way of her and someone that she was in love with. She thought about it all so much that she fell asleep.

When Kit woke up, she was still sitting at the table downstairs. When she looked at the clock, it was 1:30 in the morning. She slowly trudged up the stairs and opened the door to the newsies bunk room. The lights were out and all of the newsies were asleep in their beds. She was careful not to wake them and tiptoed to the bathroom to change out of her dress. She took out her hair, washed her face, and threw on some night clothes. After she was done in the bathroom, she went over to her bed, got in, and pulled the covers over her. Then all of the sudden she felt a hand cover her mouth and she tried to scream.

"Shh...it's just me, Spot." He whispered to her and took his hand away from her mouth.

"Spot, what the heck are ya doin in my bed?" Kit said rolling over in the bed to face him. She noticed right away that he wasn't wearing a shirt.

"This was da only bed left. I swear I didn't know it was yours!" Spot said whispering. "It's ok; I'll just go downstairs and find somewhere to sleep." And he started to get out of the bed.

"No, it's all right." Kit said stopping him. "You can stay here."

"You sure?" Spot asked with a surprised look on his face.

"Yes I'm sure, just don't try anything." Kit whispered and turned over on her side, facing away from him.

The bed was very small and Spot couldn't find a comfortable position to sleep. Finally he turned over on his side facing Kit.

"Uhh, Kit? Is this all right?" Spot asked slowly putting his arm around her waist.

"Yeah, do you have enough room now?" Kit asked him quietly.

"Yeah, goodnight Kit" He whispered in her ear.

"Good night, Spot" She said resting her hand on his, and they both fell asleep.

Kit woke up the next morning before all of the other newsies and slowly got out of bed, careful not to wake Spot. She climbed out onto the rooftop of the Newsboys Lodging House and sat down in her spot where she went to be alone. She sat there for a while, thinking about Spot and her feelings for him.

"Ok. I'll admit it. I am in love with Spot Conlon." She said to herself. "At first I was afraid to, because I had always been told about how he was with girls, but maybe not everything you hear is true. I don't know! I'm so confused right now. All I need is for him to say the word and I'd be his. But could it really be that easy?"

She realized that she had been sitting up there for a while now, so she went back downstairs and outside to the distribution Office. Kit got her papes and started walking to her usual selling spot in Central Park, when suddenly she was yanked into an alley by someone. When she looked up to see who it was, she saw Spot Conlon standing in front of her.

"Spot! What the heck did you do that for? I was just about to go sell my papes!" Kit said panting.

"We need to tawk, Kit. And I couldn't wait till later." He explained to her.

"All right, what did you want to talk about?" Kit asked calmly.

"Well, I know that some people have told ya about how I have a bad history with goils, and dat I always just go from one to da next."

"Wait, Spot..." Kit protested.

"No, I gotta say dis." He stopped her and took her hands. "Now dis used to be true. I guess I never found da right goil, so I would just move on to da next one to keep up with my rep. But then I met you, and I couldn't get ya off my mind. This never happened wit any of da other goils and it felt different wit you. Like I didn't have to pretend with my feelings for someone cause the feelings were already there."

Kit couldn't believe what she was hearing. Her eyes started to fill with tears of joy.

"And, so I guess what I'm trying to say is...Kit, I think I've fallen in love wit you. And I was wondering if ya might have da same feelings for me." He said to her.

"Oh Spot!" Kit said, quickly hugging him around the neck, tears running down her cheeks. "You don't know how happy I am to hear you say that. I love you too!"

The two of them stood there in each others arms, hugging one another. Then Spot lifted Kit's face up to his, wiped the tears away from her cheeks, and leaned in and kissed her. This was a more passionate kiss then their first one. When they parted, the two of them smiled at each other.

"So, does dis mean your me goil now?" Spot asked with a smirk.

Kit laughed. "Of course! There's no way I'm letting any girl near my Spot!"

"Well, how could ya resist me, bein da famous leader of Brooklyn an all!" Spot said proudly.

"Yeah, yeah, sure!" Kit said, laughing.

Then the two of them left the alley and sold their papers together in Central Park. When they went to Tibby's together for lunch, most of the newsies had already heard about the two of them, and hooted and whistled when they walked through the door. After everyone greeted them, Mush pulled Kit aside to talk to her.

"Hey Mush, are ya disappointed that I gave in?" Kit asked him.

"No, I'm relieved. I was wondering if you too were ever going to get together. Ya had me worried there for a little while!" Mush said, laughing.

"What! Ya mean ya knew I liked him all along and ya didn't say anything?" Kit said, surprised.

"Well, I knew you'd figure everything out on your own." Mush said to her and gave her a hug.

Then Kit went over and sat next to Spot in a booth with the other newsies. He put his arm around her and gave her a kiss on the cheek. For once, she had everything figured out and she was never going to let a small rumor affect her that baldy again. Being with Spot made perfect sense to Kit and it was going to be like that for a long time.
