During the infamous newsy strike in New York City, there were female newsies. In fact, about one in every three newsies were girls. As sighted in a newspaper article dating during the months of the strike: "The few weary-looking women who sell newspapers on Park Row and at the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge apparently are not participating in the strike, for they offered all of the evening papers for sale, as usual. They passed unmolested through the lines of strikers, and, indeed, mingled with the boys and offered the barred papers for sale...." New York Times, July 22th, 1899 Page 4 For that very reason, the girls lodging house is sometimes deemed "The Bridge" in fan-fiction and the like. When the Disney film hit the theaters there was not the take that was expected. Some critics said that it was a bomb or a total failure, but then when you look back over the past ten years you see a total different aspect. The Newsies movie has generated one of the biggest fan-bases on the internet ever brought by a movie. Some how that fan-base had to begin.
