Passover
A study of the Jewish Passover has enriched my confidence that Jesus is the Messiah prophesied of in the Old Testament. The Jews celebrated the Passover every year. Gods reason for this yearly Feast of the Passover was to remind them of the birth of the nation of Israel and how God delivered them from bondage. This is also a great likeness that was to present beautifully Christ and his mission. The Jews were to be watching and have eyes to see and ears to hear when John the Baptist said, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. John 1:29

Remember all those plagues to convince Pharoah to let the people go. Then the One plague more!--death to the firstborn was about to come. There was no difference between the firstborn of Egypt and the firstborn of Israel. All who trusted in the application of the blood on their door posts would be saved. The death of the lamb made a new beginning and deliverance just as the death of Christ makes a new beginning and deliverance for the believing sinner (you and I) who accepts Christs blood atonement.

As presented in Exodus 12:1-5 this Lamb is selected on the tenth day and slain between the evenings of the fourteenth and fifteenth days. The lamb was set aside for death. The lamb was to be a male without blemish, as Jesus was. From the tenth to the fourteenth days, the people watched the lambs to make sure they were satisfactory. Similarly, Jesus was tested and watched the last week.

A living lamb could not save. We are not saved by Christs example or His life. We are saved by death and shedding of blood as Lev 17:11 says, For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.

Blood on the doorpost seemed like foolishness to the wise Egyptians but it was Gods instruction for deliverance. Just as for you and I the cross as the only way may seem foolish but as in 1 Cor 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. When we get to heaven we will all be singing joyfully, Worthy is the Lamb! as told in Revelations 5:12.

It took faith to be delivered that night in Egypt but Gods Word had been spoken and Moses people were saved by the blood. God did exactly what He said he would do and he kept his Word. So also we can be reminded that God will save us just as promised if we accept the blood of Jesus Christ as our Passover Lamb.
