Association
of British Insurers
Contains a good consumer advice section and
an archive of hugely useful research papers such as their Compendium of Arson in
the UK.
Bank
of England
Lots of info on the history of the Bank of
England and what its role is. There are links to other central banks. Interest
Rate decisions made by the Monetary Policy Committee are also available on this
site.
British
Chambers of Commerce
News and information from the BCC, plus a
directory of local UK chambers with contact names and numbers.
Business
Information Sources on the Internet
This academic gateway site to business
information is very well respected and an excellent and approachable starting
point. Over 700 links to company and market information, business news, and
other resources within the subject area. The emphasis is on UK and European
business, but there are international links. Go to the 'Company profiles and
financial information' for annual reports. The search engine is limited, so take
the subject area route, and browse.
Companies
House
All UK companies by law must register here and give (limited)
information about their annual financial position. The root source for the names
and addresses of company directors.. This
site produces a limited amount of free information. For lists of directors,
annual reports, company details etc. But for a full search you may need to visit
the library in person. Probably better to use summary information from clippings
libraries (especially FT) or services like Hemscott, unless doing deep
investigative story and already have some understanding of company law and
accounting conventions.
Financial Times
The FT site is easy to use and is packed with
business news and background material. Search for current info or use the
'Global Archive'. You can browse under specific areas such as 'Companies' or
'Industries'. There is a fee for some of the info but there is still lots of
free stuff.
Hemscott
Net
Business news, comment and reference material
from Hemmington Scott's well designed site. Popular with professional investors,
but still easy to use for everyone else. Go to the 'Investor Info' for company
annual reports. Hemscott has all the expected business links - markets,
currencies, personal finance and so on. In the 'Business' section you can search
for 'Disqualified Directors' and unquoted companies. Other useful sections are
'UK Guidelines on the Euro' and the 'Banking' link which gives you access to an
abstract version of Treasury Management magazine.
HM
Treasury
Comprehensive details of every Budget and
Pre-Budget since 1994. Plus press releases, speeches, ministerial profiles,
etc..
Hoovers
UK
This is the UK version of the popular Hoovers
business information site. It's great for company financial data, background and
analysis on individual companies and industries. The 'Directory' links to other
useful business sites.
Trade
Association Forum
Search for details of UK trade associations
by name or by related industry. Extremely useful sites for tracking down people
representing industries in the news, or for obtaining press releases and invites
to press conferences.
World
Bank
Policy and operations information with a
large archive of official documents and papers. The Research section is
particularly useful.
