NB: University of Westminster (Harrow) has CD-Roms of the Financial Times, Times and other titles going back to the EARLY '90s (rare on the web). There is a clipping search service which uses multiple newspapers at the same time available via the UoW intranet. (Can only be used inside the college).

Electronic Telegraph: Online version of the Daily Telegraph. Superb searchable site (though the search button - top right - is hard to see). Goes back to mid-90s and will return lots of articles on most subjects and people. You have to set the search engine to particular sections of the paper (sport, city, features, arts, etc). Other online broadsheets are good (partic. Guardian Unlimited). But Electronic Telegraph appears to scan more of the articles and goes back further.

BBC News Online: The search box in the top right corner is is certain to turn up articles on most news events, political and social subject and newsworthy people. Each page brought up by the search has further links within the subject area to more stories and to reliable non-BBC websites dealing with the person or subject matter. There are also pictures, sound and audio files which can be downloaded, but it illegal (copyright) to repost these without permission.

The Times and The Sunday Times: Complete archives  going back to 1996.  Not searchable but you can choose any date. You have to register first but it's free. Go to the main front page Then  click on the "Library" button on the masthead.

The Guardian: Go to main Guardian page and click on "Archive". You can search by headline or text.

The Financial Times:  Must register first, but it's free. Offers an excellent archive search . Click on "Search site" on the masthead.

Financial Times - Specials Archive: Various in-depth reports

Financial Times Global Archives: Many excellent world papers.  You can search by region or publication

Journalismnet: UK archives and links to many archives around the world (eg Brazil, South Africa)

Colindale (British Library newspaper collection): Colindale has every copy of every newspaper ever published in the UK (plus many from around the world). They have just started putting the collection on-line (in full facsimile form). It will grow over time. At the moment it has only historic editions of the News of the World. It will grow over time, but for the time being the on-line service is not very useful. For a really deep research job you have to go there in person (Colindale - northern line).

Google - best general search engine<: Search terms may turn up more obscure material on your research topic, including information which has been published exclusively on the internet, or by amateurs, academic departments and enthusiasts. Be careful to check the authority and authenticity/reliability of sites you use.
