Victims: Immense human suffering

SUMMARY:

The number of confirmed dead and those reported missing from the September 11 attacks total more than 5,000. Thousands more have been treated at hospitals for everything from respiratory difficulties to crushed limbs to severe burns, and some are in critical condition.

UPDATE:

A total of 266 passengers and crew perished on the four planes that were hijacked and crashed into New York's World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in southwest Pennsylvania.

At least 201 people have been confirmed dead in the World Trade Center attacks. More than 5,422 people have been reported missing, including firefighters and personnel and New York Police Department and Port Authority police officers. Rescuers continue to sift through thousands of tons of debris for more possible survivors as friends and relatives of the missing wait and hope.

The death toll at the Pentagon stood at 188.

President Bush called for a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance on Friday as the nation began to come to grips with the immense losses.

KEY QUESTIONS:

How long will it take for relatives to receive confirmation of the fate of the missing?

What is the extent of the injuries among the survivors?

Will any more survivors be rescued from the World Trade Center debris?

IMPACT:

The immense human suffering, combined with the destruction of American symbols of power and strength, mark September 11 as a day of infamy permanently seared into the national psyche.
