Stating that the Commissioners think it desirable for the protection against smallpox that the medical officers should examine the inmates of the workhouse and ascertain whether each of them has been vaccinated and should vaccinate any not already vaccinated.

Calling for an abstract from the Treasurers Rate in Aid Cash Book showing the total lodgements made with the Treasurer prior to and during the period from 2 nd Feb 1850 to 2 nd March 1850.

Referring to minutes of Proceedings of the Board of Guardians of the Newport Union on the 4 th inst. containing a resolution relating to the proposed re-evaluation of the Rateable property in the Union in which it states that the re-evaluation will be completed by 1 st July next.
It appears to the Commissioners that nearly four months is a long time to allow for the completion of the re-evaluation of the union and the Commissioners trust that the period proposed by the Board of Guardians should be shortened.
No 11,601/50 Dated 16 th March 1850
Referring to minutes of Proceedings of the Board of Guardians on the 25 th ultimo containing a resolution proposing to fix the salaries of the Master and Matron of the Workhouse at Thirty and Fifteen pounds per annum respectively. The Commissioners request they may be informed whether it is intended to appoint assistant officers in the Melcomb auxiliary workhouses.
The Commissioners doubt whether the Guardians will be able to secure the services at salaries so low as those proposed . The Commissioners consider that the proposed salary of the Medical officer viz thirty pounds per annum is not proportional to the extent of his duties and responsibility and they request the Guardians will reconsider the subject with a view to allow that officer an adequate salary.

Acknowledging the receipt of Mr Patrick Browne’s letter of the 18 th instant, proposing to erect a workhouse for the Newport union for a sum of four thousand and fifty pounds.
The Commissioners express their acceptance of this tender , the building to be completed in fifteen months from the date of contract.
The cases of provisional relief and applications for relief were considered and decided on as set forth in the Application and Report books.
The number of applicants admitted to the workhouse was 43
The number of cases of provisional outdoor relief was 11
The number of cases in which relief was continued by the Guardians was 11
The number of other applicants in the Relieving Officers Books relieved by order of Guardians was 36
The number of applicants for which relief was not ordered 67
The Board having considered the Commissioners communication of 16 th inst. No 11,601/50 Resolved that the Board of Guardians are of the opinion that the salaries proposed by them for the Master and Matron of the workhouse in this Union are sufficient considering the valuation and extent of the Union. With regard to the proposed salary of the Medical officer the following resolution was proposed by Mr Malley and seconded by Mr McDonnell. Resolved that the Medical officers salary be increased to forty pounds.
The Board having divided three members voted for the resolution and three against it the numbers therefore being equal the resolution fell to the ground.
Resolved That the Board do not find themselves in a position to decide the tenders for valuation until next Board day. In the meantime the Clerk is directed to hold communications with Mr Moore and Mr Parrott who are candidates for the office.
Ordered. That the Clerk write to Mr Thom for 10 filed books and 10 Poor Rate Valuation books to be forwarded immediately.
