Following letters from the PLC
No 6917/50 Dated 8 th Day 1850
Stating that an advertisement has been published for tenders for the erection of a workhouse for the Union.
Same letter also refers to a reply which the Commissioners have received from their solicitors to an enquiry made by them as to the period when the Deed of Conveyance of the site of the Workhouse will b e completed.

States that they are in daily expectation of receiving from Messrs Furlong and La Touche a statement of Sir R A O’Donnell’s title to the premises which they are informed is verbally are held by lease a copy of which we have called upon them to furnish.
Mr Browne who had been appointed to examine the premises proposed for temporary accommodation gave the following report.
To the Board of Guardians Newport, Mayo
Newport Union 11 th Feb 1850
Gentlemen,
According to your directions I have carefully examined the house of Tymore and find it is capable of accommodating 300 persons by an outlay of £200 giving day rooms, washhouse and nursery privies etc. etc.
I have also examined the house of Seamount and offices attached and find it will accommodate 500 persons by an outlay of £60 giving one day room, one school room, nursery and privies etc. etc. Also the house of Melcomb with the sheds it will give accommodation to 150 persons by an outlay of seventy pounds with one day room, one school room wash house privies etc.
Melcomb and Seamount attached will afford accommodation for 650 persons with the necessary offices required for a temporary Workhouse.

Mr Browne has been requested to give in a specification of the particulars alluded to in his report.
Resolved. That the tender of Sir R A O’Donnell Bart to let the house of Seamount with the land attached to it and the farm yard at Melcomb at £100 be accepted and that the tender of Mr Charles McDonnell to let the premises of Tymore at £70 be accepted . Both of the above houses to be taken for the purpose of temporary workhouse accommodation.
Resolved. That a meeting be held on Saturday the 16 th day of February for the purpose of revising the Out Door Relief lists of the Newport District and on Friday the 22 nd February to revise the relief lists of the Achill and Ballycroy Districts.
