Sent advertisements to the General Advertiser, Constitution and Telegraph Newspapers stating that the Board of Guardians will proceed to appoint a competent person to revaluate the Union.

Sent advertisements to the local newspapers stating that the Board of Guardians will consider tenders from competent persons for fitting up the houses of Seamount and Melcomb.

Authorising the Guardians of the Newport Union to appoint a fit and competent person to make a revaluation of the Hereditaments liable to be rated within the said Union.

Calling the attention of the Board of Guardians to a practice that prevails in some Unions of authorizing , Out Door Relief without noting the period unless that relief shall be given the Commissioners deem it right to call the attention of the Board of Guardians to the subject and to point out that the Applicants and Report Book is framed with a view to the Guardians direction been given each case to the duration as well as to the nature of the relief.

Calling for an return showing the several writs and executions tried or executed against the board of Guardians during the year 1849.

Acknowledging the receipt of a letter from the Returning officer of this Union enclosing a list of candidates duly nominated for the Office of Guardian in the Newport Union. Same letter also staes that the divisions for which no nominations have been duly made must be left blank in the Return hereafter to be made in which the circumstances should be stated according to the fact.

Newport Union

Expressing the Commissioners sanction of the taking of Sir Richard O’Donnell’s premises of Seamount and Melcomb for Auxillary Workhouses in this Union.

The cases of provisional relief and applications for relief were considered and decided on as set forth in the Application and Report books.

The number of applicants disallowed entry to the workhouse was 5

The number of applicants admitted to the workhouse was 88

The number of cases of provisional outdoor relief was 43

The number of cases in which relief was continued by the Guardians was 35

The number of other applicants in the Relieving Officers Books relieved by order of Guardians was 108

The number of applicants for which relief was not ordered 288

The list of Guardians elected for the year ending 25 th March 1851 was laid before the Board as follows.

Resolved. That the relieving officers are hereby required to furnish a list once a month to the Guardians of each Electoral Division of the names of all persons receiving relief and townland in which resident. The names to be arranged in townlands.

Resolved. That the Master of the Workhouse is hereby required to discharge all able bodied persons belonging to the Newport Union now receiving relief in Westport Workhouse in as much as the Guardians have reason to believe that employment can be obtained in the District.

Resolved. That the following tenders be accepted viz.

Mr Guff 250 pairs blankets 1/6 per pair

500 yards flannel 0/10 per yard

Mr May 500 pairs sheets 1/10 per pair

2000 yards of calico for shirting 0/3 per yard

500 yards linsey woolsey 0/10 ¾ per yard

100 men’s suits 8/9 per suit

200 boy’s suits 6/1 per suit

Mr Bernard 4500 yards of sacking for bed ticks 0/6 per yard

Mr Talbot 1000 yards Chambrey 0/6 ¾ per yard

Mr Morrison 50 caps 0/9 ½

Mr Costello 600 Tin platters 3/- per dozen

600 Tin porringers 1/6 per dozen

Ordered that the Clerk write to Mr Glenville for to come to Newport to make out a specification of the work required to be done in fitting up the houses of Seamount and Melcomb for temporary workhouses. Should Mr Glenville not be at home to write to Mr Clarke or Mr Cooley.

The following letter from Messrs Pinkerton and Thompson was laid before the Board.

Westport 18 th March 1850

Gentlemen,

We beg to inform you that unless a payment be made to us on a/c of the monies due us by the Newport union that we cannot continue to supply the Union with any further quantity of provisions.
