No 5778 Date 2 nd day February 1850

Appointing the Clerk of the Newport union to be Returning Officer for the said Union.

The following letters from the Poor Law Commissioners

No 4058/50 Date 30 th Jan 1850

Transmitting an accompanying Deed of Charge on the rates for securing the repayment of the Loan (Five Thousand pounds) for the purpose of purchasing land and building thereon a workhouse for the Union which Deed when executed to be forwarded to Messrs Barnes Winter and Bernard, Great Winchester Street, London, solicitors to the Public Works Loan Commissioners.

Board Room

Westport 30 th January 1850

Stating that the reason the balance of meal remaining on hands of the Relieving Officers of the Newport District on the 8 th October last being charged at so high a price was a consequence of the Relieving Officer having for the three or four weeks which preceded the 8 th October took credit for his issues of meal at £1 per ton under contract price and in addition to which he omitted to charge the sum of £7 3s 0d for freight and distribution.

The Clerk laid before the Board a deed of Charge on the Rates for securing the repayment of the loan (Five Thousand pounds) for the purpose of purchasing land and building thereon a workhouse.

The Deed was duly signed by the Chairman of the Meeting and two others of the Guardians present after which it was countersigned by the Clerk.

The Committee having reported on the premises of Mr McDonnell think it is expedient that a competent person should be had to examine them.

Resolved that the Clerk write to Mr Pat Brown for to come and examine the place and make an estimate of the probable expense which may be required to put them in repair and also the extent of the accommodation.

Resolved. That if the Relieving Officers do not keep their books cleaner than what they have done for the time past , that they will be fined the sum of one pound each.

Notice of Motion. Mr Malley will on Monday 18 th day of February 1850 propose that an assistant Relieving Officer (at 7/6 per week) be appointed to assist Mr Clarkson in the execution of his duties.

The cases of provisional relief and applications for relief were considered and decided on as set forth in the Application and Report books.

The number of cases of provisional outdoor relief was 18

The number of cases in which relief was continued by the Guardians was 17

The number of other applicants in the Relieving Officers Books relieved by order of Guardians was 160
