The clerks report on the execution of the orders previously made by the Board was read to the following effect. Wrote to Messrs Pinkerton and Thompson and William Livingston Merchants in Westport, John Malley, Richard Creeth and Hugh O’Donnell Merchants in Newport informing them of the intention of the guardians to receive tenders for the supplying of provisions as referred to in Minute No. 1

Posted Notices in Newport that tenders should be considered for the carriage of provisions to the several districts in the Newport union. Wrote to Mr Alex Thom for the several books that were ordered . Purchased from Mr Creeth sixteen hundreds of meal for the Achill District at £6.50 per ton and handed same over to the Relieving Officer per Pat Grehan carrier. Wrote to the Manager of the National Bank of Ireland requesting him to act as Treasurer to the Newport Union.

The following letters from the poor Law Commissioners and others were read by the Clerk and directions given to answer them respectively to the following effect for orders made on them respectively as follows.

No 67282/49 Date 20 th Oct 1849

Stating that the Commissioners of Her Majesties Treasury on the subject of Funds requisite for the Union. That a portion of the Rate in Aid will be made available for the Newport Union.

No 66855/49 Date 22 nd Oct 1849

Stating that the Commissioners approval of the appointment of Mr Thomas Clarkson, Mr Thomas Nixon and Mr John Corrigan respectively to the office of the Relieving Officers. Also their approval of the provisional appointments of John Bole and William Walsh to be distributors of food.

Number of applicants admitted to workhouse was 45

The number of other applicants in the Relieving Officers Books relieved by order of the Guardians was 8

The number of applicants for whom relief was not ordered 67

Resolved: That the purchase of 16 cwts of Rye Meal at the rate of £6 5s 0d per ton by Dodwell Browne from Richard Creeth of Newport amounting to £5 be agreed.

That the tender of Richard Creeth to supply Rye Meal at Newport for four weeks from 29 th inst. at £6 5s 0d per ton be accepted.

That Dodwell Browne of Newport be appointed Clerk to the Board of Guardians of the Newport Union at a salary of fifty pounds per annum and that Sir Richard A O’Donnell Bart and Doctor Davis of Newport be accepted as sureties for him in a joint bond for £100 and that the appointment be provisional until the election of the Ordinary Board of Guardians.

That in consequence of there having been no proposals for the carriage of meal to Achill and Ballycroy the Clerk be directed to have placards posted, specifying that proposals will be considered on Monday next, for carriage of meal to the above districts.

That the Clerk be directed to require tenders for an office for himself and a room (if possible attached to it) suitable to contain the elected Board . Proposals to state monthly rent.

That Pat Grehan be allowed for the 16 cwts. of meal carried to Achill six pence per cwt.

Next meeting of the guardians to be held on Monday the 5 th day of November 1849.
