The following letters from the Poor Law Commissioners and others were read by the Clerk and directions given to answer them respectively to the following effect or order made on them respectively as follows.

Stating the Commissioners sanction of the Monday being fixed as the day of the weekly meeting of the Guardians. Same letter also states the Commissioners sanction of the appointment of Mr Browne to the office of Clerk of the Union.

Calling the Clerks attention to the circumstance that the expense of the Outdoor Relief afforded in the Newport Union during the week ended 24 th ultimo has not been stated in the minutes of Proceedings of the board of Guardians on the 26 th ultimo and requiring of the Clerk to state the amount in order that the omission may be supplied.

Sir,

The Commissioners for administering the laws for relief of the Poor in Ireland, observe that on the 3 rd inst. the day on which the usual meeting of the Board of Guardians of Newport union should have been held there was not a sufficient number of members present to constitute a Board and consequently there was no business transacted.

The Commissioners trust there will be a full attendance of Guardians in future on the days appointed for meetings of the Board.

The cases of provisional relief and applications for relief were considered and decided on as set forth in the Application and Report books.

The number of applicants admitted to the workhouse was 59

The number of cases of provisional outdoor relief was 14

The number of cases in which relief was continued by the Guardians was 8

The number of other applicants in the Relieving Officers Books relieved by order of Guardians was 36

The number of applicants for which relief was not ordered 13

Next meeting of Guardians to be held on Monday 24 th Dec 1849

Resolved . That a meeting be held on Friday next the 21 st Dec for the purpose of revising the Out Door Relief Lists of Newport East, Shramore, Derryloughan and Newport West and on Thursday 27 th December to revise the relief lists of Achill, Dooega, Slievemore, Corraun, Achill, Ballycroy North and Ballycroy South.

The Relieving officers will warn the various persons to attend on the above days at the hour of 11 o’clock.

Resolved that the board of Guardians meet at Westport Workhouse on 22 nd December on 22 nd December to hold a revision of the persons from the Newport Union who are receiving relief in the Westport Workhouse and that the Clerk write to the master of the workhouse informing him of the above resolution.

Resolved that the Relieving Officers are hereby required to complete the index to the application and report back forthwith to this date and keep up the same for time to time.
