Copy of Minutes of the Proceedings of the Board of Guardians 15th October 1849 .

There were no applicants for situation of clerk in attendance.

Resolved . That Dodwell Browne be appointed to act temporarily as Clerk at a salary of one pound per week.

That advertisements be inserted in the local newspapers (The Telegraph and Constitution ) stating that applications for the appointment of Clerk will be considered at the Court House at Newport on Monday 29 th October.

Applications to be addressed to the Clerk of the Newport Union at Newport on or before Saturday the 27 th October accompanied by testimonials of character and letters from two solvent persons stating their willingness to become sureties in a joint bond for the sum of £100. Salary to be £50 per annum.

That Monday be the day of the weekly meeting of the Board. The Court House at Newport the place of meeting and the hour eleven o’clock in the forenoon.

Resolved that Mr Thomas Clarkson be appointed Relieving Officer of the Electoral Divisions of Newport East, Shramore, Derryloughan and Newport West from and after the 8 th inst. at a salary of £50 per annum.

That Thomas Nixon be appointed Relieving Officer of the Electoral divisions of Achill, Dooega, Slievemore and Carrawn, Achill at a salary of £50 per annum and that Mr John Corrigan be appointed Relieving Officer of the Electoral divisions of Ballycroy North and Ballycroy South at a salary of £40 per annum from and after the same date.

That until further instructions Mr Thomas Nixon and Mr John Corrigan direct the applicants from their respective divisions to attend at Newport on alternate Board days and that the applicants for Mr Nixon’s district attend accordingly on Monday next.

Ordered that the Clerk write to Mr. Alex Thom for the following books and forms. 1 Clerk of Union’s abstract lodgements, 1 Inventory book, 2 Guardians draft books on Treasurer, 1 Ledger, I Letter book, 1 Liability book, 1Minute book, 1 Rough Minute book, 1 Minute book for committee, 2 Order check books, 1 Receipt and payment book, 1 Treasurer’s receipt and payment book, 2 Treasurer’s receipt in aid cash books, 2 Treasurer’s receipts [Form C] 100 leaves, 1 portfolio, 1 Commission and discharge book, 1 Record of deaths, 1 Record of births, 1 monthly relief list and half yearly abstract, 1 Registry book for 5000 paupers, 1 outdoor relief register for 10,000 persons, 10 outdoor relief lists, 10 Relieving Officers application and report books, 3 Relieving Officers weekly receipt and expenditure books, 1 abstract of outdoor relief lists, 3 provision distribution books, 3 relieving officers check books of admission to workhouse, 200 Relieving officers diary sheets, 1 Bond for Clerk, 1 Bond for Treasurer, 2 Green covers addressed to Commissioners, 4 Gov Minute paper, 1 Compendium, 1 Supplementary Compendium, 1 Sanitary Acts, 11 Townland books.

Resolved: That the following persons be appointed distributors of provisions to the recipients of Outdoor Relief from and after the 2 nd inst. at a remuneration of 5/- per ton.

That the Master of the Westport Workhouse be requested to furnish as soon as possible a return according to the usual form, showing the number of each class of paupers belonging to the Newport union who received relief in the workhouse during the week ended 13 th inst., and that a similar return be forwarded weekly to the clerk of the Newport Union to be laid before the Board every Monday.

Resolved: That the tender of William Livingston to supply one ton of Rye Meal at Westport Quay at the rate of £6 10s 0d per ton be accepted

That the provisions be carried to Ballycroy by Pat Grehan at a remuneration of 15/-

Resolved that Messrs Clarkson and Nixon Relieving Officers attend at the Westport Workhouse on Wednesday next the 17 th inst at 11 0’clock to which day the meeting is adjourned for the purpose of revising the list of paupers from the Newport Union now receiving relief in the Westport Workhouse.

Next meeting of the guardians to be held on Monday 22 nd day of October 1849.
