The following Orders of the Poor Law Commissioners were laid before the Board and directions given thereon as follows.

No. 74,712 /49 Date 4 th December 1849

Ordering that five Guardians be elected for the Electoral Divisions of Achill , Dooega, Slievemore, Corrawn, Achill and Ballycroy South.

Westport Union Board Room, Westport

8 th December 1849

Gentlemen,

I am directed by the guardians of the Poor of the Westport Union to draw your attenetion to the amount due by you as appeared by the Estimates furnished of the probable expenditure from 8 th October last to 29 th inst. on account of the Workhouses in this Union namely £727 1s 0d and to request you will forthwith cause this sum to be paid into the Bank of Ireland, Westport to the Credit of the Westport Union in pursuance of the Order of the Poor Law Commissioners Dated 27 th October last.

The Guardians apprehend that considerable embarrassment will be caused in the affairs of this Union should you allow the above debt to accumulate and they therefore desire me to request that you will make immediate arrangements to have it liquidated.

The cases of provisional relief and applications for relief were considered and decided on as set forth in the Application and Report books.

Number of applicants to workhouse 176

The number of other applicants in the Relieving Officers Books relieved by order of Guardians was 62

The number of applicants for which relief was not ordered 52

A letter from the Clerk of the Westport Union having been read calling upon the Guardians of the Newport Union to pay a sum of £727 1s 0d due for the support of Paupers from this Union in the Westport Workhouse from 8 th Oct to 29 th inst.

Resolved: That it appearing that all monies collected out of this Union are placed to the Credit of the debts or liabilities formerly involved when it formed part of the Westport Union we have no funds out of which we could pay the said sum of £727 1s 0d or to meet the current expenses of our paupers in the workhouse. We do respectfully request of the Commissioners for the Relief of the Poor in Ireland to take our case into their consideration.

Resolved: That the tender of Mr John Malley to supply Barley Meal at £7.0.0 per ton for the Out Door Relief of this Union be accepted for one month from 10 th December 1849.

Resolved that the salaries of the Relieving Officers be reduced as follows.

Mr Thomas Clarkson be reduced from £50 to £35.

Mr Thomas Nixon be reduced from £50 to £25.

Mr John Corrigan be reduced from £40 to £25.

Subject to the sanction of the Poor Law Commissioners

Ordered: That the Clerk write to Mr. Thom for forms of Bonds for Relieving Officers
