Moving to the spot right above the red waterfall, Darius looks closely at the scroll and hums.  In short time, he begins to read the words on the scroll, and Othrek finds that he can fly.

The best sources for potions in Diamond Lake are Valkus Dun and Allustan.  The group finds Allustan at his house.  The rubble has been cleared away and a frame put in its place.  He is working alongside a halforc to rebuild his house.  A dragonchess board rests on the grass nearby, with the pieces in the same position as they were when Othrek and Raegar first met Allustan.

After discussing the problem, Allustan says, "Of course, I can brew some potions for you.  But I'll have to sell them to you.  Between my attempts at excavating the Whispering Cairn and now the process of rebuilding Diamond Lake, I am out of money.  Sadly, my primary spellbook is dissolved so I only have a few spells available in my traveling spellbook."

Valkus can brew any potion of cleric 3rd level or lower.

Allustan can brew "fly"  and some other spells that wouldn't help.  He can brew more if you bring him the scroll or a spellbook.

It takes one day per potion.

Allustan is also willing to go with you, if you give a break to either Valkus or Darius, and cut Allustan in on a share of whatever you find.

For Darius to cast fly from a scroll, he needs to make a DC 25 check.  His modifier is +8.  He can retry until he rolls a 1.

I have 123 Lbs in my bag of holding, but 45 lbs is rations.  I could leave the rations at the top and still have 172 Lbs avalaible in it (250-123+45).  If I put the rest of my gear in it minus my mythril shirt (58 Lbs), I'd have 114 Lbs of space in my bag of holding and I'd weigh 130 Lbs.

Pancake, Raegar, and Othrek descend the caverns with the other party members hanging on.  They fly down to the cascade of waterfalls and then up behind it to a flight of stairs.  The stairs lead up to a dead end, and only Othrek sees the outline of the secret door flare with soft white light.

The door opens into a small cave.  The walls and floor of this cave have obviously been partially finished by stoneworkers.  More impressive by far are the massive, fifty-foot-tall doors to the north.  These dull black doors are carved with both gigantic and tiny runes, some at eye level and others much larger.  The metal of the door seems pristine and freshly forged.

Both Valkus and Pancake are overcome by an aversion to the doors.  Pancake can not resist his desire to avoid the place and stays twenty feet away from the doors.  Valkus manages to enter the room, but finds his movement slower than normal.

Nym asks Othrek, "Did the doors budge?  Do you think we should try using more of us to open them?  They are rather large and heavy, maybe too heavy for even a part dragon such as yourself."

Valkus casts a spell allowing him to read the runes on the door.  Most of the words are apparently unimportant, but the sentence above the handles catches his attention.

"It says: "Dare not enter the tomb of Icosiol, Lord of Calim, Wandering Duke, and Bearer of the Scepter of Calim.  His righteous peace and glorious memory are best left to the ages, and his enemies are best left forever sleeping."

If the fly spell is still in effect, Nym flies up and inspects the crack between the two doors and the crack between the bottom of the door and the floor and the top of the door and the wall/ceiling with his everburning torch for strong light for a locking mechanisim.  If he does not discern one, Nym pulls out his ropes and ties them to the handle of the door that looks most likely to open first.

Othrek paces for several seconds in the dark of the eerie hallway.

"We must have answers!" he suddenly exclaims.  "Who could give them to us?  Allustan has told us all he can, and I don't think that salamander knows about anything beyond the room he was supposed to guard.  And I'd rather not have to deal with the spider and his gibber-speak.  But I fear we may have to…"

Othrek pauses suddenly, then his face grows excited.  "Maybe… maybe the one who knows more about these doors lived and explored down in these caverns!  Maybe we already killed him!"

Othrek searches through the party's bags until he finds the five old books that Moreto had been carrying.  He skims through them for several minutes, hoping to find something about Icosiol or his tomb.

When Othrek raises the crystal disc, he feels a sense of weightlessness.  A voice speaks in his head the words Akadi, Calim, and Icosiol, but Othrek already knows what to say.  When he has finished speaking, the large double doors swing open soundlessly.  Valkus and Pancake feel restored, and Pancake finds himself able to enter the room.

The chamber beyond contains seven stone columns, each slightly taller than the next, rising slowly from the entrance to a small platform at the far end of the room before a second set of enormous doors.  No floor is visible-- in its place is a pit filled at a depth of eighty feet with glowing blue fog.  Swirling patterns of wind and lightning dance and howl along the walls and ceiling of the chamber, filling the room with a tumultuous roar.

Each of the seven columns appears slightly different.  The closest column's top is level with the ground in the entrance room.  The next column is two feet higher.  The third rises up to the ceiling forty feet above.  The fourth is three feet higher than the second one, but rotates slowly in place.  The fifth column's upper surface seems to be covered with a thick layer of what looks like tar, and is about one foot higher than the last.  The sixth column is two feet higher than the previous one but is made of a lighter colored stone.  A larger column, nearly twice the diameter of the others, stands to the left of the main row.

Nym does not detect any snares or mechanical traps.

Othrek flies into the room with Darius on his back and is immediately struck by a bolt of lightning and a blast of hurricane-force wind.  Darius partly dodges the lightning, holding onto Othrek with one hand.  However, the wind breaks his grip, and he goes hurtling back into the entry room, scraping across the floor and slamming into the wall.  Othrek takes the full brunt of the lightning bolt, but holds strong in the wind and is not blown back.  The gust of wind stops, and Othrek is free to fly further into the room, if he chooses.

Darius takes 17 points of damage and 8 points of nonlethal damage.  Othrek takes 34 points of damage from the lightning bolt (after DR).

Othrek only makes his way a few feet across the room when two fgiures fly up from the blue fog below.  They are amorphous, shifting clouds surrounded by fast-moving currents of air.  Darker bits of twirling vapor form the suggestion of eyes and mouths, but this could be a trick of the swirling air.  One flies up directly underneath Othrek, and the other soars up next to him.  They both slam into him.  They slam into him again before he has a chance to react, leaving Othrek on the threshold of consciousness.

Nym seems more confident than before as he addresses the rest of the party, "We could not find any trace of Mimsy, but we did identify the Banded Mail we found and it is +2 with Electricity Resistance.  This could be a handy suit for a situation like this.  Darius or Valkus might want this to travel across the first room.  I could prepare Protection from Electricity and Resist Electricity tomorrow.  Does anyone want to volunteer to test Othrek's theory that if we stick to the pillars the air elementals won't attack.  Maybe the lighting won't be triggered that way either.  But, I'd rather send someone into the room wearing this armor, even if it is pancake or raegar.  I am not proficient with such heavy armor and I become less able to defend myself in it, otherwise I'd volunteer.

If we decide to test it and we find the lightning is still an issue regardless, we can then wait until tomorrow and use my spells or make other plans."

If you do try to jump from column to column, the first pillar has a jump DC 5 (assuming a 20 feet running start).  The second column has a jump DC 30 (assuming no running start).  The third column goes all the way up to the ceiling, so you can't jump onto it.  Remember to modify your jump roll if your speed is greater or less than 30 (-6 for every 10 feet below, +4 for every 10 feet above).

Darius can give a +2 bonus to one skill check in one person by inspiring competence with his music.  He can do this 9 times per day.

"On second thought, those pillars don't look like one can jump without a flying spell to keep us going.  I think we are going to have to lure those wind creatures out of there and take em out so we can fly across.  Honestly, I'd rather have everyone in the party able to fly freely so we can fight these guys on even terms, and who knows what lays beyond that last door.  I have asked Alustan to brew me two flame arrow oils to increase my bow's ability to do damage.  I'd feel better fighting these wind creatures with some ability to contribute.

As Othrek jumps to the column, he is surprised to find that the top half of the pillar does not exist.  However, he has enough self-control over the jump to land on the part of the column which does exist, one foot above the previous column.  Touching the top part of the column, Othrek now sees through the illusion.

The next column slowly rotates.

The rest of the party needs to make a DC19 Will Save to disbelieve the illusion.  If you fail, your jump checks onto the column have a -5 penalty.

The turning column also gives a -5 penalty to Jump checks.  DC 22 to jump onto it.  Each round on the column make a Balance check DC 12.  Failure by 5 or more, and you fall off.

From there, you can jump to the tar coated column, DC 22, or to the larger column off of the main row (DC 20)

The tar-like substance is some type of magical sludge, and Othrek begins bouncing as soon as he lands on the column.  The bouncing causes him to lose control and he boucnes off the edge, plummeting through the fog, falling 500 feet.

Badly hurt, Othrek finds himself on a stone floor.  He can only see 5 feet around him through the fog.

Othrek takes 69 points of damage.  Make a Fortitude save DC 15 or die from massive damage.

Among other effects, Haste increases speed by 30 up to a maximum of twice your normal speed (in other words, if your speed is 20, it only increases your speed by 20).  This helps jump because: "If your speed is less than 30 feet, you take a –6 penalty for every 10 feet of speed less than 30 feet. If your speed is greater than 30 feet, you gain a +4 bonus for every 10 feet beyond 30 feet."

The Air Walk spell does allow you to go upwards, as though climbing a hill.  Valkus can prepare that spell up to two uses every day.

Armor will have no effect on damage from falling.

I´d also like to hear from Buck and Mark.  As soon as one of their characters is needed, this whole shindig might come to a halt.  I´m still wondering if we should just play on openrpg and forget about the boards.  We can discuss this in the OOC thread.

As Nym reaches the end of the hallway Raegar stops and looks behind at Nym but sliips on a wet rock and falls off the cliff.  Before Raegar falls very far, Nym sees a large dire bat fly down the waterfall.  There may or may not have been someone riding the bat.  Not long after this sight, Nym sees the large dire bat holding Raegar in his mouth by a tuft of hair.  There is a blue man with white hair dressed in brown and green earthy colored vestments riding the dire bat.  He instructs the bat to place Raegar ever so gingerly upon the ground at the edge of the cliff.  The blue man and the bat then land and greet the visibly shaken Raegar.  "Well met there friend.  May I call you Raegar the epic ass kicker?  We have heard of your exploits in the Lizard Marsh and Waterdeep and we came looking for you and the dragon Ilthane.  When we arrived in town and saw that Ilthane, bane of the Lizard Marsh, had been killed we were very pleased.  We asked who had done this great service to our circle.  Once we were told it was you and some who travel with you we decided to explore this place to see if we could find you.  You see we are from Calimshan and have much interest in all things djinn.  We are an air genasi.  We are also a druid who was sent to deal with an undead problem that a circle of druids were having in the Lizard Marsh.  Our name is Zus Suzerain.  Why were you falling off that cliff?"

They buried their dead far to the north these Cairn Hills. I suspect this is likely the tomb of Icosiol.  The Scepter of Calim was an artifact that served as a symbol of the djinni's sovereignty of the Calim empire. It was forged by the Wandering Dukes and wielded by Icosiol who used it to destroy a portal Memnon’s armies were relying upon at the Battle of Teshyllal Fields. It was later shattered by elven high mages and is now known as the Shattered Scepter of Calim.  The secpter, even in fragemnted form, would be of great interest to us and our circle.  We know of several houses of learning in Calimport that also might want to gaze upon it.  As for what we know about our ancestors the wind djinni, The Wind Dukes of Calim were djinni generals of the Calim empire who warred with the Memnonnar army of Memnon. "Well met, new ally,"  Valkus says and then turns to Othrek and Nym, "My place is at Pancake Batter's side.  However, I will travel with you across the columns if you need me.  But when we return, I shall depart with Batter, as he needs time to recover from the chaotic force of these doors."




After entering the room, you will be hit by a bolt of lightning (DC 20 reflex save for half damag) or a blast of wind (Fort save DC 20 or be blown away)
Here are the jump DC's to get to the columns
column 1: DC 5
column 2: DC 30
column 3: DC 18 (-5 to Jump check if you believe the illusion.  You can disbelieve with a DC 19 Will check)
column 4: DC 22 (-5 to Jump check because its spinning)  After landing on this column, must make DC 12 Balance check every round.  If fail by 5, fall off.
column 5: DC 22.  After landing, must make DC 20 Balance check because of bouncy sludge.  The sludge grants a +10 to next jump check.
column 6: DC 16
larger column: DC 20 from column 4 or DC 14 from column 5
You don't yet know the Jump DC's to get to the last columns

"We are trying to get to those doors on the other side,"  Othrek says to Zus above the sound of the wind and lightning.  "If we try to fly across--by spell or by bat, I assume--two giant air elementals will appear and attack.  They appear to be very difficult foes, but you might have some spell that would subdue them.  If we try to leap across the columns, they won't attack us, apparently.  But we need to cast a couple of spells to augment our jumping ability.  Do you have anything that might help with that?  Valkus here mentioned something called "Air Walk.  Or a spell that might lessen the danger of the wind and lightning?"

Othrek tells Valkus that it is entirely his own decision whether or not to brave the column room with the party.

"Yes.  By Shaundakul, yes.  We shall cast barkskin and resist energy electicity on us."  He casts the spells on himself and by proximity Swish.  "We will cast control winds and decrease this gust to a mere breeze as we enter.  We can control the wind but we cannot do anything to you others about the lightning.  Before we do so, if anyone is injured we can heal them. We will use our special boots and fly into the room with swish by our side and try talking to these wind creatures after we have reduced the strength of the wind.  We speak Auran.  If they cannot be reasoned with we will attack them while you three cross.  We will also summon another few dire bats to help fight if necessary.  Nym, we have cast air walk on you."  Zus casts air walk on Nym, Bull's strength on himself, and greater magic fang on Swish.  He also casts summon nature's ally  III and gets 2 dire bats to appear at his side.  "Here, I have cast a greater magic fang on you Swish.  Bite their heads off if they attack!"  If no one needs healing, then he and swish and the bats walk into the room as he casts control winds and then flies into the air looking for Air elementals.

Before Zus walks into the room, Nym says, "Zus, you are indeed faithful to your cause.  But, let me inform you a bit more.  These air elementals can hardly be touched by my arrows or my blade, so without the aid of magic, I will be of little help once we move into that room.  I believe Othrek and Pancake may have better chances of actually hurting them, and our friend Raegar will not be joining us.  I have asked our friend Allustan conjure up some flame arrow oils to aid my combat, the second of which will be ready tomorow, yet I am not sure if even they will be of use against these air elementals you are prepared to face.  I have prepared two protection from energy and two jump spells for today as well.

I don't doubt your courage or your abilities in combat.  Rather I want to prepare ourselves as much as possible for what we know lies ahead and for what lies beyond that second door.  I was hoping to be able to return to the surface before we did battle today or tomorrow to retrieve one or both of the flame arrow oils before we see combat."

Othrek nods his head as Nym speaks.

"But since our friend is clearly eager to help, let's at least try to go across those pillars now.  I say we go with the air walk spells.  One has already been cast on Nym.  Valkus can cast it on myself and Zus.  I will carry Darius on my back, if he wants."

He nods at the four gigantic menacing bats.  "Your friends are very beautiful," he says to Zus.  "But they must wait on this side of the room for the time being.  I fear that any flying creature will provoke the elementals into appearing and attacking.  Trust me--we don't want to do battle with them unless it is absolutely necessary."


Once Valkus has cast air walk, Othrek will begin the jaunt across the pillars.  He will take the protection from energy spells too, and if Zus wants to cast control winds, that might help as well.  The important thing is that we don't fly.

Nym smirks and says, "I don't think Zus was preparing airwalk to jump onto the pllars with, but rather to simply attack the air elementals on their own turf.  But if they won't appear as long as we stay close to the pillars, this spell may do the job.  That does mean that Swish and these other creatures may be left behind unless we take out the elementals.

If they do appear let us deal with them then.  Rather than waste a spell on you Ohtrek (assuming this will simply test their propensity to return), let me do the honors.  Hand me the disk in case I need it for the other side and I will test to see if these air elementals will attack."
Assuming Othrek agrees and gives him the disk, Nym casts protection from energy electricity on himself.

Nym walks across the air and is hit by a bolt of lightning and a blast of wind with the strength of a hurricane.  He dodges the lightning completely and holds strong against the wind.  As he approaches the first pillar, the air elementals rise from the fog.  They slam into him, leaving him wounded.

I don't see Mountain Lion in the Monster Manual so the stats in the table right now are for Zus, instead of mountain lion Zus.  Let me know if you want to be more like a cheetah or leopard.  If you have mountain lion stats from some source, let me know the stats.

Zus motions for the two summoned dire bats to attack the air elementals and for Swish to take flight above him and he and casts call lightning storm (commanding the first bolt to go through both air elementals starting above 2 and going to 1 and going in a straight line but avoiding Nym and the bats).  All this is kinda cool to watch because he's a mountain lion (Zus has the feat natural spell  and is doing the verbal and somatic components to his spell as a mountain lion).  He growls and scratches the air in just the right way to call the lightning storm.

I misunderstood the call lightning spell.  It only will work on one of the elementals at a time -- 5 ft wide vertical bolt dealing 5d6 lighning dmg. DC=19.  I guess it will do damage on the elemental labeled 2 since it can't do both 1 and 2.

23:23, Today: Zus rolled 17 using 5d6. rolls for lightning storm.

If that works I assume it only does 7 damage b/c of damage reduction.

Zus will back up  5 feet if possible as well if he has any move actions left what with all the growling and scratching.

Zus's summoned dire bats swoop towards the air elementals and get badly bruised by blows from the elementals.  Neither bat is able to bite the air creatures.

Zus begins the process of calling a lightning storm.  Othrek steps up.  Nym backs away, and the elementals fly back down into the fog out of site.

Zus completes the casting of the spell.
