Searching the room, Nym discovers the tracks of a humanoid leading from the door they entered through the southern door. He opens the southern door and finds a hallway, sloping down.

Othrek examines the chandeliers and sees tiny statuettes, depicting a horned demon covered with many eyes surrendering its weapons to a djinni general. On the outer spokes of the chandeliers, he sees fire salamanders, genies bathed in fire, and armored humanoids with long-fingered hands, vaguely reptilian faces, and reddish-brown skin all surrendering to the same djinni general. Other statuettes depict glowing wind warriors holding rods with hoops and using them to ward off black spheres in a battle.

The frescoes and wall decorations show an icy giant with a thick white beard of ice reaching for a square stone covered with runes on a platter carried by small glowing creatures. Three runes seem to be spilling from the creature's mouth.

Othrek listens once at the western door, hears nothing, and opens it. He finds a wall. He moves to the north door and listens, hears nothing, and opens it.

This small but well-appointed room has a delicately arched ceiling. The walls are painted with garden scenes featuring two djinni lovers, and the center of the room contains a large urn with a dark red glaze and gold decorations. Six small boxes, each carved of some black substance bound with corroded metal, line the back wall. Chairs sit in each corner.

The hallway turns and slopes down, ending in a room.

This rectangular room has small columns around the edges that partially hide the carvings along the walls. Pale white light glows from two large wheel-shaped chandeliers, casting overlapping shadows throughout the room. Blue metal double doors stand at the top of a flight of stairs opposite the main entrance, guarded by two warrior figures with raised double swords, as well as a single doorway to the south and double doors to the north, also guarded by warrior statues.

Nym follows the tracks into the room, until an enormous black spider with bracers on two of its eight legs appears in the room.

The spider speaks in a high-pitched screech. "Find me you found me. Coming into my tomb you did with your touch and smell how does this feel it feels like that it feels like that? it does it does. Flycatcher is I, and you is the tomb-robbers who lost an immortal. Where is the immortal? Weak he was, no fight when Flycatcher, who is Blackleg, who is Cornerweaver, felt him cross my shadow and picked him away. Took him away Flycatcher did, Flaycatcher is I. Want him, don't you? What will you do to get him if you want him do you want him? Flycatcher will need a favor I will."

Flycatcher looks at the somewhat puzzled expressions on the faces around him. It lets out a loud scream.

Flycatcher likes nice one who says Cornerweaver clever so I Flycatcher trades you your trap-fiddler for 20,000 gold coins and you bring Flycatcher head of Moreto and I give you back gold coins so I know I trust you because you show me thieves who come in my temple to steal so you will come back for your greedy gold or treasure armor, necklace you come back because I keep if you don't bring back head Moreto because maybe you not so good to find Moreto without trap-fiddler."

When Flycatcher sees Nym listen at the southern door, it snarls.

"Why so unclever two-leg furry-fang-friend? Walker Across Threshold I told you where to go Moreto. Follow blood river pretty river blood. No more clear I told you where go doors point all but two you.

Flycatcher watches Nym open the eastern door and then vanishes. The door opens into another room.

A small statue of an armored Wind Duke, his left hand resting on a sword, his right held up to shield his eyes, stands at the far wall of this room as part of a small shrine. The statue seems to be made of gold, with sparkling blue gems for eyes; a beam of bright light shines onto the statue from above. The walls are carved with bas-reliefs of Wind Duke servants bowing and soldiers saluting. An elaborate carpet covers the floor, but it is badly worn and the colors have faded—only small patches of the complete pattern remain.

He places his hands on his knees and gradually catches his breath.

"What did I miss?" he eventually asks.

"We conversed with the shadow spider creature that kidnapped Zonkel's father. He spoke in riddles, but pretty clearly promised us his safe return for the severed head of our quarry. It is clear that he is an undead ghoul of sorts which helps me track him better. We are following his tracks which lead through the southern door. I was just explaining that we might want to leave the statues alone until we've found and slain him. That way any magical traps he may have set might be deactivated with the second death of the undead master."

I am not certain whether he will return our friend at this point, as he seemd upset that Nym was opening the Eastern door, which is one of the two doors he pointed at and told us not to go through," says Pancake.

Perhaps we should go back into that room and try the northern door instead. Why should we assume these are the tracks of a ghoul?"

Out of character comment: after reading the DM's Joycean dialogue for Flycatcher several times (great stuff, by the way), it appears that this was the situation: at first, he was going to offer you Zonks if you brought him the ghoul's head. Then, when Flapjack complimented him, he amended his offer so that he would release Zonks now (allowing us our rogue to search for traps), as long as we gave him 20,000 gp, or items of equivalent value, as collateral so that we would still get the head. I think this is what Panake said but I just thought I would do my best to clarify things.

Othrek lays down a masterwork warhammer, Murlynd's spoon, an eversmoking bottle, almost all of his gold, a cloak of resistance, three feather tokens and some boots of striding and springing.

"Do we have a deal, sir?" he asks.

"The one from the sun desert has dug deep down to reach my tomb and come to speak soft sand words unsand like cold shadows and give me his shinies. The spider makes a motion as though he were tucking a blanket over Othrek's treasure, but instead he seems to pull a shadow from the ground and wrap it over the items, which disappear. Flycatcher then skuttles into the corner and touches the ground. Zonks appear there, bandaged in thick strands of shadows.

The spider unravels Zonks who squints from the sudden bright light and then presses his hands against the walls and floor and himself.

"What a difference!" Zonks exclaims, "I'm afraid the shadow world is not my element at all. Give me a machine I can touch and disassemble! A horrible, horrible experience."

Zonkel runs up and hugs his father.

However, he snarled at Nym when he tried to go through this door before. Strange!

Zonks opens the door.

This room is full of flickering bluish light and a breeze that smells like thunderstorms. The floor slopes down toward the center from all directions, like a funnel. At the bottom crackles a sparkling globe of lightning. A metallic spike protruding down from a stone block in the ceiling touches the very tip of the globe’s upper curve. Inside the globe floats a human figure, a man with a long dark beard wearing torn and stained red robes.

Zonks scans the entrance to the room, looking through his prism. He holds out his arms to prevent anyone from entering.

"Stepping into this room will trigger a trap of some sort. I am guessing that the globe is the source. If I could get there, I could disable it, but I'm not sure what will happen if I enter the room. Hmm, a conundrum."

Nym returns the potion to his potion belt and takes the hardtack in his right hand, spits on it and squeezes it into a rounded shape and steps back and to the right of the door, clearing the entrance to the room, and says, "Take cover away from the door! There might be a lightning strike." Then, after the party moves aside of the entrance, he rolls the hardtack and spit ball into the room down towards the globe of lightning.

Zonks says, "Alright. Let's try."

He takes Nym's potion and drinks it, turning into a yellow-green gas. As he floats into the room, the spike fires out a bolt of lightning at him. The lightning surrounds and crackles through the floating Zonks. He returns to the doorway and materializes, badly injured.

"My body seems to be malfunctioning," Zonks says.

"The trap is magical and too complex for you to deactivate it. But there might be something you can do. One possibility would be to destroy that metal spike. That should stop it from working."

The spike has hardness 10 (meaning you subtract 10 from any damage to it). It has 180hp. It can be broken in one try with a break check DC 36 (roll d20 and add strength modifier)

A river surges through the tomb here, its red water as bright as blood. A stone bridge crosses the river, but the pilings have been undermined by erosion over the centuries, and the bridge arches are barely holding. In several places, the bridge tilts dangerously to the side. On the far side of the river is a fortified gatehouse, dimly visible and secured by an enormous rusted gate. The gate must be fifteen feet tall and just as wide.

With the exception of Nym, no one else sees what has frightened Zonks. Then a deep, gravelly voice calls, "They've spotted us. Attack!"

Six bizarre creatures rise from the stone ground on both sides of the bridge. They have wide bodies made of pebbly stonelike material. They have large, powerful mouths on top of their heads, with three long arms, tipped with sharp talons, symmetrically positioned around them. Between the arms are large, stone-lidded eyes that see in all directions. At their base are three thick, short legs, each directly beneath an eye.

Zonks fires off two arrows across the river. Both miss.

"A cleric came here named Rorn Oxdragon. He spoke highly of Pancake Batter, a disciple of my church. I have considered his words carefully and have determined that Tyr assigned me the task of aiding you in your quest."

Valkus Dun follows Nym back to the Feral Dog, where Othrek is being healed by his followers as well as Pancake's followers. They heal Othrek, Pancake, and Raegar back to full. Valkus heals Zonks.

"Pancake Batter," Dun says, "Follower of the Even-Handed and Slayer of the Ulgurstasta, would you do me honor of taking me into your service?"

Zonkel fills him in on their exploration of the door in the Whispering Cairn and their discovery of Allustan in a large globe.

Zonks speaks up, "I'm not sure how much longer I can accompany you. I have several family members to visit to deliver the newest Spectaculus book. But I don't want you to face all those traps without my expertise, so I guess my sense of duty brings me back to the Cairn in the morning."

If it is okay with everyone else, I suggest we let Zonks and Zonkel leave to enjoy some family bonding, and we take Mimsy with us in the morning instead."

Othrek walks up to Zonkel. "Do not see this as the end of our adventures together, friend. I fear that the tasks ahead may be too dangerous, and I do not want you to lose your life for a third time. Wherever your journeys with your father may take you, send me a letter, and I will write back with an extremely detailed account of my journeys, so that you may continue your great historical work. We will meet again, but until then, I offer you the blessings of Bahamut. You have been the greatest biographer I could ask for!"

He wipes the tears from his eyes and gives Zonkel a big dragon-hug.

"He raised me from the time I was born. My mother Muffy was raped by a fucking demon, you see." Looking at Othrek she smiles a disgusting sharp pointy teeth smile.

She flicks her tail at Pancake and continues with her story. "My grandfather was a snooty Waterdavian noble merchant and he hid her in a nunnery. Didn't want word getting out about a demon child in the family I guess. Of course I can't blame him. I did bite the Nun's finger off who midwifed me. Fucking bitch threw me out of the window after I bit her! Nuns are such cunts. Especially those who worship Tyr." She flicks her tail again at Pancake. "Fortunately for me old Fagin was walking by the window as the cunt threw me out of it. Being a wizard and not liking to see children get splattered on the pavement outside nunneries, even ones as shabby as Tyr's, Fagin cast levitate and brought me safely into his arms. He was no fool and could immediately tell from my pointy teeth, red eyes, and tail why the Tyr cunt threw me out of the window. Not to mention the finger I was chewing on. So he took me home. Only Mystra knows why. He lived in a home above a shop where he sold illicit magical items. He raised me and taught me magic and the ways of Mystra. He watched as I knicked purses from ladies in Waterdeep, pilfered small items off of store shelves, and snuck about in the shadows. At age 8 he encouraged me to join the gang of thieving street urchins known as the Dodgers who operated out of his shop. He made a tidy profit on the gang's earnings."

Noticing the blank stare on Raegar's face and quizzical look on Nym's, she says, "Anyway, while traveling with Fagin on our way to visit a friend of his named Allustan, I purchased some potions from a kobold on the side of the road. Fagin drank the potion after a skirmish with some road bandits. He said he felt something floating inside the potion as he drank it. In the morning, he felt as though his stomach was crawling with worms. Fucking crap if it wasn't. Some days later, I awoke next to a horrible undead creature with green worms crawling out of it. Fagin had been transformed. With great regret, I knifed him over and over and over again until I finally figured out how the fuck to kill him. Then I humted down that Kobold who sold me the potion. I interrogated the kobold, but he did not seem to know about why the potion had transformed Fagin. Dumb little fuck. I showed him one of the green worms I had managed to save off of Fagin's corpse and put into the vial I showed to you earlier. He said he got the potion from a black dragon named Ilthane. I forced him to take me to Ilthane. We traveled through the Lizard Marsh but met up with another kobold. Whatever the fuck his name was said that the kobolds were assigned by Ilthane to guard the eggs of a lizardfolk tribe as well as the egg of Ilthane. This kobold whose name I can't fucking remember and was living in the swamp said something horrible had happened. Ithane's egg did not contain a dragon. Instead it contained thousands of green worms. The worms exited the egg and entered the lizardfolk eggs which hatched, releasing tiny undead lizardfolk. The undead lizardfolk spread throughout the tribe infecting the kobolds and lizardfolk. Soon the whole swamp was infested by horrible undead. He said a half-dragon and dwarf had come to the swamp and destroyed the majority of the undead."

She looks at Othrek and then at Raegar. "I assume they were speaking of you Othrek and you Raegar. Anyway, The fucking informative Kobold said that later Ilthane had arrived, heard that the undead were wiped out, and stormed off in a rage. So I turned around and headed back to the road and asked some dumb cunt where Ilthane was and she didn't know, som I stole some of her shit. I asked some fatass dwarf and he said that I better not go that way because some big ass black dragon had just attacked the town. I told the dwarf to fuck off, stole his pony, and set off for Diamond Lake. What are the fucking odds? Before I got to town I heard about Ilthane's rampage and later death. I decided to find you guys and so here we god damn are."

Her raven peeks her head out from behind her hood. "Oh, this is my raven, Cassandra. Cassandra this is everyone."

Othrek tosses the rope to Mimsy who catches it. He pulls her to shore.

One by one, he pulls the other members of the party across the river.

The entrance to the gatehouse is made of flaking, rusting iron, with hinges on the other side and a series of glyphs and protective amulets inset in the iron. Some of the amulets look almost like feathers, while others seem more like mill wheels or maybe latches or levers. The thick rust makes it difficult to say what the engravings are really meant to be. Some seem to be smudged with black dirt or ashes.

I cannot figure this door out. I am no Zonks, I guess. So I think we should assume this door is trapped. So now I think we have three options. We can either try to open this door, try to swim down the stream to the waterfall the spider spoke of or try to breakout Allustan. I have prepared spells to help resist lightning if we want to do that. And, the spider told us we could get to our destination via that route or this one.

Mimsy fiddles with one of the devices on the door. As she does so, a stream of profanities flows unfettered from her mouth. It is horrible. At last she disarms a device. As soon as she does so, the knob slips away and is replaced with a lever. Mimsy mumbles something which sounds like several curses blended together. She sets to work at removing the lever.

Finally, Mimsy disables the lever and the gate door opens. Behind it is another door, less battered but also covered with a variety of complex devices. Mimsy searches and says amidst a description of various sexual practices that some of the devices don't even seem to connect to anything.

Uttering some curses in dwarven, Mimsy disables several traps until she can open the gatehouse door, only to find another door. She turns bright red and unleashes a 30 minute tirade as she makes her way through the traps of this door and then the next. She finally opens the fourth door and quietly says,

"Fuck."

The door opens to a dead-end.

Nym casts Protection from Energy Ligtning on Othrek and Resist Energy Lightning as well and says, "Tie your rope around you and we can pull you out if something happens. Be careful on that sloped floor too."

the spells should overlap to provide 60 HP protection against lightning for up to 50 minutes and after the protection is gone the resist energy spell will provide 10 Pts reduction in damage each round for up to 50 minutes. Let's just say we hope this does not take 50 minutes.
