Whispering Cairn 3: This Time its Personal by DM Bill (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
The walls of this passageway are scarred and dented, indicating that this whole area has been, until recently, collapsed.  At the end of the tunnel stands a glossy black surface with a raised sphere in the center, like the boss in the center of a shield.  The glossy black surface resembles a heavily lacquered door.

Nobblywonk lies halfway inside the door beneath the dead body of the abyssal ghoul Nym slayed.  The door ripples around Nobblywonk's body like it was made of water.

Nym does not find anything.

The party moves through the door to the other side.

This sharply sloped hallway is filled with rushing, screaming wind and smoke.  Small hollow projections in the hallway seem to be making the noise, but it’s obvious that air inside is being pushed out an unusual rate.  The noise makes hearing and speaking difficult.

Six masses of dark smoke move against the breeze, shifting shape as they come closer.  The cloudlike smoke surrounds the party.

One of the clouds floats around Zonkel.  Although he tries not to, Zonkel breathes in the cloud.  He yells out in pain, and his belly shifts as though something were trying to claw out.

Another cloud surrounds Nym, but Nym does not breath it in.  It materializes as a demonic creature of smoke and wind with large batlike wings, clawed tendrils, and a biting maw.

A third claw attempts to enter Othrek, but he coughs it right back out.  It also materializes as a demonic winged creature.

Zonkel tries to cough and say something which sounds like, "There's a hand inside me!" but the combination of his coughing and the strong wind in the room makes it difficult to be sure.  He coughs up a claw which then transforms into another winged creature.

Nobblywonk's flame strike destroys one of the belkers and damages the others.  The belker that Zonkel coughs out behind him smashes Nobblywonk with its wing and then claws him.

Re: Through the door by DM Bill (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Nym finds that the screaming winds in this hallway come from twelve stone nosemaking projections in the walls.  The party moves into the next room, led by Othrek and Raegar.

This tall, temple-like chamber has a forty-foot-high ceiling.  Carved stone pillars reach up to the ceiling in elegant lines, but strange clusters of spikes stick up from the floor in two distinct areas, like barricades.

Near the doors to the north, south, and east stand carved stone images of tall, elongated humanoid forms.  A series of small openings, each about one inch in diameter, festoon the wall between these forms.  Beneath these openings are small basins, each about the size of an apple.  Strange undulations make the doors and nearby walls seem more like a curtain than a level surface.  Twisting runes wind over the walls.  The floor has channels carved in it, as if to transport water, but nothing flows there now.

Re: Through the door by DM Bill (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Othrek heads over to the south door to listen.  As he steps near it, a plume of white vapor that looks like fog issues out of the nearby basin.  The vapor runs up along the wall and melds with the bas-reliefs, generating a fluid image that shows a powerful djinni general in a cataclysmic battle with some demons.  The final image depicts this djinni general forming an alliance with a strange white bearded man ostenibly made of ice.  At the end of the display, the gas fountain shows the general holding a large square seal in one hand and a long staff in the other as if to display them to the viewer.  Othrek breathes in the vapor and is poisoned.  He listens at the south door and hears nothing.  He moves to the other two doors but when he approaches both, the same vapor issues out of the basins.  Othrek steps away befor breathing in more of the gas.

Nym searches the room, finding the walls covered in runes in a strange language.  When he steps near the blade barricades, a powerful blast of wind tries to push him onto the spikes.

Nym needs to make a Fort save DC 20 or be pushed onto onto the spikes (13 points of damage.)
Othrek resists the initial effects of the poison.  In one minute, he will need to make another Fort save DC 18 or lose 7 points of Dexterity.

The town rejoices to hear of the dragon slaying.  Talk begins of erecting a second plaque.  Nobblywonk casts various healing spells bringing everyone back to full.  He uses his wand of restoration to heal the effects of the poisonous gas on Othrek.  He apologizes for not neutralizing the poison before it took its effects.

Othrek leads the party back to the room with the vapor.  He removes the Talisman of the Sphere from his haversack and holds it up to the wall to see if anything happens.  He also tries to open the south door.

Re: The next morning by DM Bill (GM)

Othrek displays the talisman, but it does not affect the images.  He opens the door.

This intersection is lit by six flickering orange and yellow lanterns that float around a central statue of grey stone.  The statue shows a djinni wearing robes that seem to be stirred by a breeze.  The symbol may be a figure of justice or war, for it holds a glittering sword outstretched in one hand and carries a balance in the other.  The statue is eight feet tall and stands on a four-foot-tall pedestal.

"Can you tell what it was that had this effect on you, Othrek?  How can I protect myself against it?" asks Pancake.

"I was frozen and rendered deaf by something in that hallway.  This Cairn is riddled with traps!  It's too bad the centaur sneak is dead -- we could use his trap detection abilities.  Maybe we should go back to Diamond Lake and hire someone?"

Re: The next morning by Nobblywonk Gimble
-----------------------------------------------------------
"Yes, by Gond." says Nobblywonk as he tries the wand of restoration on both Nym and Othrek and himself and wonders what day it is and what is going on and if it is raining and if so if he should put on a raincoat.  <orange></orange>

Central Square by DM Bill (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Nobblywonk's spells do not affect Othrek or Nym.

With the dragging Nym, the party slowly returns to the Central Square of Diamond Lake.  They enter the Feral Dog, a sleazy tavern where Pancake and Othrek find their followers lounging about and drinking.  After confirming that they are wll fed, the party moves across the square to Lazare's House, a cozy gaming parlor with a stylish stone and timber construction and distinctive peaked roof.

Zonkel stops abruptly as he gazes about the room.  "Is that...?  That's my father."

An elf, looking similar to Zonkel in appearance, sits over a game of dragonchess, which he is obviously losing.  As though he senses Zonkel's presence, he looks up and smiles.  He tosses some gold coins to his opponent, rises, and approaches the party.

"My son!  How fare you?  Word has spread throughout the town that you slew a dragon!"

Zonkel hugs him, "I merely scribed the slaying of a dragon.  In fact, it was my companions who brought the serpent down.  But what are you doing in Diamond Lake?"

Zonkel's father replies, "I came to bring you good news.  Your granduncle's mongraph has been published!"  He hands over a book entitled The Pseudodragon and its Complex of Inferiority by Zonkel Spectaculus II.

"But Zonkel," his father continues, "Why have you not introduced me to your companions.  I have seen your plaque so I know some of your names.  And I have also heard of a Pancake Batter, a great gladiator whose victory is spoken of across all of the Sword Coast.  My name is Zonkel Spectaculus.  You may call me Zonks."

His eyes widen as he spots Kerplunk.  "Exquisite craftmanship!  Who made this?"

===========================================================
Re: Central Square by Othrek Svearmiirik
-----------------------------------------------------------
Othrek shakes the hand of the elder Zonkel Spectaculus.  "A pleasure to meet you, Zonks; my name is Othrek Svearmiirik, and may I just say that your son speaks too modestly of his role within this adventuring party.  I have seen Zonkel grow not only as a writer but also as a wizard in my many travels with him.  I imagine that by now his notes on our adventures together could fill several tomes.  You should be quite proud of him!"

"So, if this psuedodragon-studying psuedouncle is Zonkel Spectaculus the Second, what does that make the two of you?  The third and fourth?  We recently had a lot of trouble with a group of Lord Urtoses who did not necessarily pass their name straight from a father to a son.

"Lastly, I wonder if you, Zonks, could help us with a little trouble that we're in.  Though the dragon-slaying went splendidly, we find ourselves still searching for an old firend, Allustan, who also happens to be Mayor Neff's brother.  The last we saw of him, Allustan had vanished into a place called the Whispering Cairn.  This dungeon has been booby-trapped and then some, and it has been difficult for us to make much progress.  We were wondering if there might be a roguish trapkiller somewhere in town who might porvide us with some help.  Have you heard tell of anyone like this during your stay in town?"

===========================================================
Re: Central Square by DM Bill (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Zonkel answers, "Yes, I am Zonkel IV and my father is the third.  There is a story behind the name, but it is a long one.  My father's life work is to understand the material world.  He specializes in machines, including traps.  Father, could you assist us?"

Zonks responds, "I am indeed the black sheep of the family, having forsaken the study of the living and devoting all my time to the study of the physical.  I can find a trap and disarm it.  I can show you how to unlock any lock.  I can tell you all about the inner workings of the human body, but nothing about what the body does when its whole.  I would be honored to help you and the famous Pancake Batter, if I can in any way."

===========================================================
Re: Central Square by Othrek Svearmiirik
-----------------------------------------------------------
Othrek says, "You will be no black sheep for us.  Welcome aboard!"

===========================================================
Re: Central Square by Nym Talisker
-----------------------------------------------------------
Yes, um, I, I, I, mean, w-w-welcome.  Oh. . . . I . . . did . . . 't introduce myself.  I' . . . m  Nym.

After speaking Nym slowly slinks back behind pancake, looking slightly bewildered and drunk.

===========================================================
Re: Central Square by DM Bill (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Zonks looks at Nym and then makes a loud clap.  "Nym appears to be deaf."

===========================================================
Re: Central Square by Othrek Svearmiirik
-----------------------------------------------------------
"That's true!" Othrek says.  "I hadn't noticed in my excitement of havong my own temporary deafness and paralysis cured.  This is what those traps in the cairn will do.  Our next stop should be at one of the temples in town, where a cleric can remove these symptoms from our elven friend.  It seems that Nobblywonk is unable, correct?"

===========================================================
Church of Tyr on 13 Marpenoth by DM Bill (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
The party travels to the Church of Tyr.  Valkus Dun is a tall handsome cleric with dark brown hair and long sideburns.  His strong brow gives him a serious look.  He wears full plate armor and has twin swords dangling from his belt.  He looks over Nym.

"I can remove your deafness immediately.  I would expect a donation to the church of 210gp."

He touches Nym's ears and says a prayer to Tyr.  Nym can hear again.  He also finds that he can move normally.

===========================================================
Re: Church of Tyr on 13 Marpenoth by Nym Talisker
-----------------------------------------------------------
Nym make a donation of 21 Platinum Pieces and gives a solemn bow to Valkus Don, and gives a sideways glance at Nobblywonk as he says, You god Tyr is truely a powerful one.  You would not have any desire to join us on our quest to track down Lord Ultros would you?  It was on this journey that I was struck deaf and almost paralized.

===========================================================
Re: Church of Tyr on 13 Marpenoth by Othrek Svearmiirik
-----------------------------------------------------------
Othrek clears his throat and whispers to Nym:  "Allustan, not Urtos."

"Now that we have our rogue and everyone feels up to speed--pun intended--shall we head back to the dungeon?"

===========================================================
Back to the Cairn on 13 Marpenoth by DM Bill (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Dun answers, "Your offer is appreciated, but my place is here, protecting Diamond Lake."

The group returns to the Whispering Cairn.  Zonks makes a thorough search of the room with the the stone pillars and spikes.  He finds multiple traps.  He pulls out a set of tools and disarms the trap next to the southern door.

Proceeding down the hallway, Zonks finds the trap that paralyzed and deafened Othrek.  His tools disable it.  He then moves to the statue and discovers the trap that deafened Nym.

He works with his tools for a second and then curses.  "I appear to have set the thing off.  Hmm, that's odd.  I can still hear myself.  Hello?  Hello?  Yes, I can hear perfectly."

An enormous spider, about 15 feet across, leaps out of the darkness.  It appears to be made of shadow, and when it grabs hold of Zonks with two of its claws, Zonks becomes a shadow.  Zonks and the spider disappear.

"Father?"  Zonkel says with a tremor.

Raegar and Othrek walk up to the trap Zonks failed to disable.  They stand at the intersection and look all around them but do not see Zonks or the shadow spider.

Re: Back to the Cairn on 13 Marpenoth by Othrek Svearmiirik

Othrek continues walking down the hallway, searching as he goes, until he reaches the southern door.  He will listen at that door.

Othrek does not hear anything at the door.

He opens it.

===========================================================
Re: Back to the Cairn on 13 Marpenoth by DM Bill (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
It opens to a wall, apparently a dead end.  Othrek searches the wall but finds no secret doors.

===========================================================
Re: Back to the Cairn on 13 Marpenoth by Othrek Svearmiirik
-----------------------------------------------------------
Othrek listens at both of the other doors in this hallway (not before searching around them for traps and shadow-spiders) and opens them if he doesn't hear anything (western door first).

===========================================================
Re: Back to the Cairn on 13 Marpenoth by DM Bill (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Othrek finds the tracks of a humanoid in the room but lacks the skill to follow them.

As Othrek moves down the western hallway, he is again paralyzed and deafened.  After a few minutes, the effects wear off.  When his hearing returns he listens at the western door and hears nothing.

He makes his way down the eastern hallway, and steps on another trap that leaves him frozen and deaf.  Again, the effects wear off.  At the eastern door, he hears the sounds of talking.

Othrek goes back and opens the western door.

This two-tiered hall shines with purple light from four large chandeliers.  A large black sphere hangs between them.  The chandeliers seem to be sculpted with small humanoid figures in silvery metal.  A second-floor gallery with arches and spirals-striped pillars runs the length of the hallway to a second set of large double doors.  The black tile floor absorbs the light from the chandeliers, and even sound in this chamber seems muted and dull.

Othrek directs the party to tread very carefully into the room.  He searches it for traps.  After that, he will listen at all the doors.

Re: Back to the Cairn on 13 Marpenoth by Nym Talisker
-----------------------------------------------------------
Nym takes a look at the tracks and tries to decipher where they lead.  If he can, he follows them carefully stepping where he sees them to avoid traps with sue behind him.  09:20, Today: Nym Talisker rolled 19 using 1d20+13. Survival check for following tracks.

===========================================================
Re: Back to the Cairn on 13 Marpenoth by DM Bill (GM)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Nym can not determine where the tracks lead.

Othrek searches the room and notices in the chandeliers that each tier of lights are tiny wind warriors fighting in a battle.  The chandeliers are shaped similar to wagon wheels with unusual spokes; each spoke is a long shaft terminating in a black metal hoop .  Tiny statuettes on one chandelier show a red, fiery-eyed giant surrendering his weapons to a djinni general.

Othrek steps on something squishy, a stone that is dark black and appears to be like the others on the floor.  As it tries to grab him, it appears as a roundish blob of inky black goo.  It fails to grab him.
