Blairstown Elementary School Library

The goal of the Blairstown Elementary
School Library is to promote self education and life-long learning by providing resources to support the curriculum, afford recreation, and meet the information needs of the students and staff.  The core collection of the library of approximately 10,000 books was selected with input from staff members.  The collection continues to be built with suggestions from students and staff.
The library is run on a fixed schedule that allows for all classes to visit the library once a week for book selection and instruction.

The Blairstown Elementary School Library is fully automated with the Spectrum software system.  This online computer catalog is available to students and staff through the computer network.  Access to the Internet, word processing and other computer programs are also available in the Publishing Center located in the upper level of the library.

MEDIA CENTER POLICIES

Borrowing Privileges:

Students in Prefirst through grade 2 may borrow 1 book at a time.  Students in grade 3 through 6 may borrow two books at a time.  Books may be borrowed for one week.  All books can be renewed, provided that there are no reserves on the books.

Reference books, magazines, and reserved books may not be borrowed for home use because so many people come to the library each day to use these items.

Overdue Materials:

When an item becomes overdue, students will be sent an overdue slip notifying them of the problem.  Upon receiving a notice, students should talk to Mrs. Miller if the book in question was returned, lost or damaged.  Students in grades 4, 5, and 6 will be charged a fine when books are returned late.  Fines are 5 cents a day for each late book.  Students that are returning books late because of an absence should inform Mrs. Miller or the library volunteer on duty.  Fines are only accrued if school is open and the student is in school.

Lost or Damaged materials:

Please notify Mrs. Miller as soon as possible if you have misplaced your library books.  You will be given a list of places to look.  If you check all of those places and still haven't found the book, you will be charged for the replacement cost of the lost book.

Damaged materials should also be brought to Mrs. Miller's attention as soon as possible.  If these materials can not be repaired, the student will be charged for the replacement cost of the damaged book.

Project Materials:

Pencils, paper, crayons, markers, rulers, and glue can be found at the student work station.  Students are welcome to help themselves provided they return the items they borrow.
