Physical Description: Jack is a tall man, still standing at six foot three inches. He has tanned skin that has a hard, weathered appearance. He has silvering black hair that he wears slicked back over the thinning patch on the top of his head. The only color in his face is a pair of bright, inquisitive blue eyes. He has a strong build and still remains fit enough to work alongside the younger generation. He dresses simply in dull, colorless tunics.
Personality: Jack is a very conservative. Hes serious and impersonal. He is devoted to his job and works long hours, and expects the same out of everyone else. He has little tolerance for the lazy or troublemakers, and shows no reluctance to unleash his temper. He asks nothing of his people that he wouldnt do himself, and always leads the ground crews to mop up fallen thread. He also is scrutinizing and quick to find faults in others, especially his children, although he places his wife on a pedestal and she could do no wrong in his eyes.
Jack is skeptical of new ideas and technology, but realizes the sleds arent going to hold out for the rest of the pass. He generally believes all resources should go to surviving, but hes making an exception for the dragon program. He used to think fire-lizards were just pests, except for his own, of course, but when the first pass began even he couldnt deny their usefulness.
Background: Jack was born eldest child to a pair of long dead researchers who were descendants of the first colonists on First Centauri. He led a relatively normal and happy childhood, although his parents were very busy and placed the responsibility of looking after his younger siblings and the household upon him. At age sixteen he joined the military and quickly rose through the ranks. At age twenty he married a homemaker named Josephine and started a family with her. He became an important leader in the Nathi space wars. The horrors he saw hardened him and created a strain in his family. When their children were grown, Josephine and Jack, now retired from military service, divorced after thirty years of marriage. Jack became involved in business and invested in a successful trading company and built himself a small fortune. He remarried five years later to a very young woman named Felicity. Because of his victories in the war, he was invited to join the Pern expedition as a charterer. Eager to start a new life with his new wife, he agreed to join the expedition, as did a son and daughter from his first marriage.
After fifteen years of slumber, Jack and his family finally arrived to Pern. With a new world before him, he settled his claim on the mouth of the Jordan River. Here he managed small family farms spread out over the fertile plateau and supervised the group of fishermen who built a dock along the shore. His hold prospered for eight years until thread struck so unexpectedly. He soon found himself up to his neck in refugees whod had their homes and farms destroyed. Taking charge, he quickly organized the construction of thread shelters for livestock and helped organize ground crews. He moved the refugees into the caves and began construction on making them livable. It was obvious that Jack was in charge. After all, it was his land. Soon Landing had to be evacuated. Being the closest hold to Landing, his hold sudden became the base of operation and earned the nickname New Landing. Soon even Jack seemed to forget his home was once called Jordan River Hold.
Jack was fortunate enough not to loose any family members to Thread, but his family was still divided when the colony split and his daughter moved north. Being a stubborn man, he is against sending an expedition north to see how they are fairing. It is a waste of resources.

Pets: Athena is a medium sized gold fire-lizard of the wild variety. Jack found the first fire-lizards to be an annoyance, but when he witnessed that they could be trained to carry messages he decided he would try his hand at training one of his own. His wife teased that even the stern leader couldn't help but we swept up in fire-lizard fever. Somebody wanting to get on the holder's good side gave him the largest egg of a clutch discovered in along the shores of his claim. Athena hatched out and he trained her with stern discipline to be the model of good flitter behavior. They've been together for eight years. Although Jack is impersonal with her in public, he secretly adores Athena. The queen has acquired so many of Jack's personality traits. She is often seen perched on his shoulder, obedient and well behaved.
He also has gentle brown mare named Freedom that Jack uses to survey his territory and visit the farms on the plateaus. He frowns upon frivolous use of sleds for transportation, so he feels he must set an example by finding alternative means of transportation.
