Personality: A soldier from the day he was born. Carl is by the book, rule-driven, don�t step out of line, I will not hesitate to give you orders or take you down military. He is very clear on who he is, where he stands, what is expected of him and what his duties are. The world is black and white. He fears nothing, even death, and has faced it a number of times before. Crack pilot, excellent with target practice, meticulous and so forth. One of the best sled Thread Fighters at New Landing, hence his position as a team leader.

Background: Carl was born to William and Nada Barker, both soldiers and officers on the Alpha 82 military base. He was raised with a sense of loyalty, duty, honor and responsibility. He never even thought he would be anything but a soldier like them. Both parents died in the Nathi War giving Carl, still young and not quite graduated into the real ranks of fighters just yet, a further sense of resolve to fight and win. He joined the Pern campaign as a pilot for the new colony, and also to help with general building, defense if necessary (he was �on call� in the deep freeze should they enter a hostile situation while traveling � it turned out to be unnecessary). He was one of the first Sled Pilots out fighting Thread and doing well, and was one of the first to sign up for the Dragon Project, as the sleds (he well knew) could only last so long.
