Name/Nicknames: Belle Moore
Gender: Female
Rank/Position: Paleontologist
Age: 33
Birthplace: First Centauri
Physical Description: Belle inherited her father's dark hair and blue
eyes. She once wore her long, wavy black hair down to her mid back,
but recently had to cut it off due to it becoming matted and tangled
beyond repair. She is a tall woman at 5'11". She was always thin and
lacking in real curves, but in recent months appears to be sickly
malnourished due to the harsh conditions in the north.
Personality: Belle never thought of herself as a leader nor a
follower. She was an independent and private person who kept her
innermost thoughts to herself. She loved being a bachelorette and had
many friends. She occasionally would take a lover, but their
relationships were always brief and private. Being in dire straights,
and the drive to protect her children, has awakened the part of Belle
capable of taking charge; it's often said reluctant leaders are the
best kind. She's practical and realistic, always has been, and is the
type to encourage looking to the future instead of dwelling on the
past. So it does also figure that she wouldn't take her own advice and
harbor some grudges of her own; there's always been some resentment of
her father's lack of presence in her younger years, never forgotten
even if forgiven and understood. And more recently, against Malloren
Morgan for bringing Cave Hold and its people so close to death and not
caring or seeing it.
Background: Belle was young enough to have escaped the horrors of the
Nathi war. She was a privileged child who loved to bury herself in
books rather than socialize. She studied paleontology in college and
dreamt of digging up fossils on newly discovered worlds. Her father
was always away growing up, so she saw the Pern expedition as not only
a chance to get to know him better but to use her new degree in
paleontology on an explored planet. The hardest part was leaving her
mother behind, but the chance to study a new world was too tempting.
Belle adjusted well into life on Pern. She had two children, holding
up her end of the agreement to people the world, but kept the
identities of their fathers to herself. She found motherhood a
pleasant surprise. She'd never felt so much love for another human
being until she held her daughter.
The unexpected Threadfall created a rift between Belle and her father,
or rather furthered a small rift that had always been there. Though
they'd grown closer since coming to Pern, she'd always had an opinion
that her father was a bit too soft and willing to give in to others.
Now their differences were much greater than minor disagreemnt. She
believed there was no way even Kitti Ping could successfully create
giant fire-lizards in such a primitive genetic laboratory. It was
best people come together and get underground. She believed that was
their only chance of surviving Thread. Belle and her father exchanged
harsh words before she left to move north.
Belle lost her young son, Atillio, during the first harsh winter. His
death was an eye-opener, and Belle realized what a mistake moving to
the north had been. She became a quiet supporter of a return to the
south. With tensions so high, she feared being too vocal for the
safety of her daughter. From his sickness and the shared stress of
worrying over young chidren, she became friends with Lilly Lee. Then
when her good friend Sutton was killed in an "accident," Belle decided
she had to take action and rallied a group of people to hijack a boat
and return to the south. She hopes to re-settle to her former
position in the sciences there, but time will tell if that will happen
or if she'll remain a leader in the people's eyes.
