Silas and Rachel Newland..... their family
Silas Henry Newland's father was James Newland born ca. 1829 to Isaac Anthony Newland and Hannah Jane Hicks.  His mother was Dellia Burch Hudson daughter of Obediah and Agnes Kerby Hudson.  She was born in 1833 in Putnam Co., MO.
I found James and "Dilly" listed in the 1850 census report in that county living near Isaac and Hannah.  Isaac was a member of the Baptist Clergy, but there was no occupation listed for James; and since Silas was born in Schuyler Co. in 1851 I can only assume that they, or the county line, moved shortly after the census was enumerated.
James died at the battle of Jenkins' Ferry in Arkansas during the Civil War.                                        Isaac Anthony Newland died in 1878 and Hannah in 1874.  They are both buried in Schuyler Co, MO.
Silas had one brother, George Newland who was born ca. 1855 and who died on Sept. 23, 1921 after being struck by lightening on his 66th birthday.  This is according to information I received from his great-grandson, Rev. Jimmy Newland of Mississippi.
We also know from the obituaries of both Silas and George Newland that there were two sisters, Mrs. Sam Prince of Leeton, MO. and Mrs. John Baker of Pawhuska, OK.
This information about Silas is confirmed to my satisfaction, and I want to thank Paula Yount for her help in supplying the information about James and "Dilly."  She is a descendant of James' sister, Cyrene Newland Rainbolt.
It is believed by some recearchers that Isaac Anthony Newland was the son of Ezekiel Newland born 1769 in Wythe Co. VA. and Milly Douglas.  Ezekiel was the son of John Newland 2nd born 1743 in Wythe Co and Mary Bess or Margaret Mary Unk.  John 2nd was the son of John of Bavaria aka Johan Uland who was born in 1710 in Bavaria.  There is at this time a controversary about this, since there were several John Newlands living in the VA. and W.VA. area at that time.  I will leave the ancestry for future chapters where I will attempt to prove my claim that Isaac Anthony is the son of Isaac and Martha Hawkins Newland.  For now, I will concentrate on the descendants.
Rachel Ellen Botts' father was Anderson Botts born June 18, 1821 Near Louisville, KY.  Her mother was Amanda Hannah Beckey born Feb. 14, 1834 at Terra Haute, IN.  They were married in Terea Haute ca. 1849.  Rachel's siblings were Sarah Jane, who was born in IN, and Susan, Samuel, Spence, Ira, Columbus, Margaret, Emma, Frank, Minia, Ida Estella, and Jennie...most of whom were born in Iowa according to information I gratefully received from the descendants of Columbus Botts...Ms. Bertha Springmeyer, Ms.Wilma Randolph, and Mr. Don Randolph.
I found Anderson and Amanda living in Sharon Springs, Wallace Co. KS. in the 1900 census.  Anderson died Nov. 1, 1905 at Sharon Springs, and Amanda died June 11, 1915 in Denver, Co.  They are both buried at Sharon Springs.
A possible route your might want to follow in tracing Anderson Botts' ancestors, if you should care to do so, would be Anderson, son of Thomas 1783 in VA.; son of Moses Botts, 1707 VA.; son of Thomas 1681, VA.; son of Thomas 1650 England.  This is unverified, but after studying the findings of various researchers I think this is probably the best direction to pursue.
Silas and Rachel lived in Schuyler and Platte Counties of MO. before moving to Caldwell, KS. sometime between 1884 and 1886.  They lived in Caldwell until the opening of the Cherokee Strip Outlet into Indian Territory in 1893.  Silas made the run that day in September with thousands of other hopefuls, but he was fortunate enought to stake a claim near Numa township where he and Rachel built their home and lived for the remainder of their lives.
They are both buried at Caldwell, KS.  In checking with the Caldwell Cemetery, I found that two of their children are buried there also.  Marked graves contain their sons, Roy and Kay.  Next to them are two unmaked graves with Silas Newland listed as the owner.  I wonder if these are the final resting places for their two babies.  There are no further records listed for verification.
