Newi played their first game in two months on Wednesday against a Manchester metropolitan university side enjoying the heights of the league table. Newi gave debuts to two new players Dan Lawrance and Gavin Hornyman playing and scrum half and second row respectively.
The Newi forwards began the game strongly camping them selves on the opposition line only to be frustrated by a strong defence in their efforts to score. Following an unforced error, by the Manchester attack close to their own line, Newi regatherd the ball, and Chris Cox sniped his way through the defences line to score his 10th try in 5 games. Following the restart Manchester applied the pressure, using a good mix of forward and backs attacks, stretching the newi defence, and going over for 2 quick fire tries to go ahead in the game. With half time closing in the attacks changed hands many times in a game which was becoming very open. After drives by forwards Alan Hardy, Geoff Lawrence and scrum half Dan "The perv" Lose forward Andrew Meadows pushed his was over from a yard out to score and Chris Cox Converted to tie the scores at 12 all at half time.
The second half began with all the pressure on the newi line, With Mickeal Dennis putting in a Great defensive performance the opposition found it extremely difficult to break through, but when they did it was two quick tries by the Manchester forwards and it looked as if newi were going to be taught a lesson in second half, however this was not the case, after some more good defensive work by Gavin young girls in school uniform lover and Dan Lawrance Newi found themselves in the opposition half with Caption Graeme Sheppard putting Meadows through a gap who then returned the ball to Sheppard with an improvised offload 10 yards out to score. With injuries and illness newi were forced to make two changes brining on two inexperienced players on either wing, Simon sayegh Tacking the restart with a great catch only to be taken out by a shocking high tackle and Manchester were therefore reduced to 12 men. And it looked like newi were going to make the opposition pay, only for the Manchester scrum half to intercept and sprint the length of the pitch to score. Newi would have the last say in the proceeding with prop Geoff Lawrence charging over to score from 10 yards. There was no time for a newi come back, finally losing out by 10 points to a good rugby team.
