2002 World Series in Salem, Oregon
Day 3, August 17th
New Image Wisconsin pitcher Jeremie Holman struck out 13 against Jeraldines, tossing a 2 hit shutout. Holman opened the tournament with a 2 hit, 11 strikeout vs. the El Segundo Rounders. Holman looked to be in control early against the Rice Lake Orangemen with the dazzling change up and lighting up a radar gun around 68 MPH, excepting Rice Lake's 4 run outburst. New Image had faced Rice Lake pitcher Larry Cushman, in in-state play. New Image has played over 100 games this year. Cushman pitched a gem tonight, tossing the change up as often as Holman, and keeping the big bashers on New Image off balance.

New Image Wisconsin hitters have something on the order of seven (7) homers for the tournament, including two each by Brent Holman and left fielder Jeff Andrews. Shortstop Harvey Knutson hit one, as did leadoff hitter Chance Schmidt, and even pitcher Jeremie Holman got into the act with one. That kind of power keeps most any game in reach, so they remain a threat to win it all, even from the loser's bracket. They are the top returning team from last year's "A" division, having finished 7-2 with a 5-2 record, with 3 players earning All World Series honors, including pitcher Jeremie Holman.
The Rice Lake Orangeman of Wisconsin and Black Oak Casino of California emerged as the winner's bracket finalists on Saturday night, in the double elimination tournament, and will meet at Wallace Marine at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday morning. The loser will then meet the team that emerges from the loser's bracket at 12:00 noon. At last report, there were 4 teams left, ABF Villard MN playing the Anderson Jaybirds and Lancaster PA playing Waterdown, Hammer, Ontario, for the right to play Quaker Riversharks and New Image.

Rice Lake topped a fellow Wisconsin team,
New Image, 5-3, behind the pitching of Larry Cushman, scoring 4 runs in the 5th and another in the 6th for the win. Cushman struck out 9 enroute to the win, while losing pitcher Jeremie Holman struck out 7.

Black Oak Casino, CA edged the Quaker Riversharks of Pennyslvania in the other semi-final game. After leading 5-0 after 3 innings, Black Oak hung on to win 8-7, despite a 7th inning home run by Quaker. David Dobson was the winning pitcher, with relief help from Ed Gasper.

The tournament began on Thursday, with 56 teams from all over the United States and Canada , competing for the "A" Division title in the NAFA (North American Fastpitch Association) World Series at Wallace Marine Park in Salem, and concludes Sunday, with the final 6 teams starting play at 8:00 a.m., with the championship game at 2:00 p.m. at Wallace Marine.
