New Hope Special Olympics was formed in 2000, to benefit the athletes with Developmental Disabilities in Pittsburg, Kansas. John Lair is the Program Director and Head Coach for the team. The team competes in over 40 events every year all over the country. New Hope staff is very involved in Special Olympics, many times volunteering several hours a week to the team. New Hope Services believes in the rights of their athletes to make their own choices. The athletes themselves choose whether or not to be involved and what events they are in. Helen Cherry and John Lair, developed the team in 2000. John Lair won the 2004-2005 Kansas Volunteer of the Year Award for his excellence in coaching and volunteering for Kansas Special Olympics. New Hope has also won several awards for greatness in Special Olympics. New Hope's John Lair recently received the Strong Leadership Award from Koam TV 7.
